Was running Gnome-3 in fallback mode (because of Intel 965 GPU) without any problems. Upgraded quite some packages and now facing the issue of blocky fonts in root-related applications (GDM, Gnome as root, ...). Attached GDM screenshot as example. When I move over the blocks with the mouse, the font is correctly rendered... sometimes (sometimes it does nothing, other times moving the mouse reverts correctly rendered words back to blocky). At the request of TomWij, also adding a tail of genlop -l to list all updated packages. Note that at the end, these include some completely blind attempts to fix this myself (e.g. emerge -e xorg-server cairo gtk+ pango). Reproducible: Always
Created attachment 353490 [details] Tail of genlop -l Updates start at Wed Jul 10 to Fri Jul 12 04:35:37. I think from then on, the blind repair attempts start.

Assigned to fonts herd; maybe they have a better idea, which font package is being problematic and why. If they deem this to be a Gnome related problem, and not due to fonts packages; they can reassign to gnome@g.o.
Can you try and see whether kdm shows the same corruption? Also, please attach your emerge --info and output of `eselect fontconfig list`
Please find below the fontconfig list and emerge --info. Will get back to you later this evening on kdm results. Checked kdm, no issues. Did not check KDE session (quite some compile time on a P4). Adding an attachment to see the behavior of startx+firefox (so no Gnome in sight I guess) leading to the same blockiness.
Created attachment 353544 [details] startx+firefox as root
This is just a guess, but can you try >=x11-libs/cairo-1.12.14-r4 and see if toggling USE=xlib-xcb helps?
Also try with a now updated system as a lot have changed since then :) Thanks
System was reduced to scrap metal. So you can close this one as I was the only one complaining
thanks for feedback
