Description Fabio Coatti 2013-07-09 12:28:26 UTC
Using for the first time sys-kernel/genkernel-next, coming from stable genkernel, I got some issues with /dev/shm directory;
basically, with new genkernel the permissions are 755 while on old genkernel the permissions are 1777.
this causes failure in several apps, most notably chrome and chromium

Reproducible: Always

    Make sure to create /dev/shm with 1777, bug #476278

    However, this seems to affect only a small set of scenarios, since
    I don't have any problems here with ~arch openrc and systemd when
    using udev.
Comment 2 Fabio Coatti 2013-07-18 12:21:10 UTC
Maybe it's my fault, but /dev/shm still has 755 permissions. maybe it's me that I'm doing something wrong but I dont' understand exactly what...
Comment 3 Mike Auty (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2013-10-29 18:27:32 UTC
This looks like it may still be an issue. Swapping from genkernel-3.4.47 to genkernel-next-40 and back affects the permissions of the /dev/shm directory. I'll do some more digging and try to find where/how it's not working correctly...
Comment 4 Mike Auty (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2013-10-30 01:22:55 UTC
Ok,

So a little more digging turns up that the line in defaults/linuxrc of:

mount -t tmpfs none /dev/shm 2>&1

Causes tmpfs to end up with 0755 permissions rather than 1777 that most things rely on. If using UDEV="no" this line can just be omitted, but udev appears to require this to be mounted in order to do things like unlocking drives with cryptsetup (where it hangs when this line isn't present).

I dunno whether the mount in the initramfs can support mode options, unless it's an ordering problem that breaks the permissions? It may be worth moving the chmod line to just underneath this one...
