what version of texlive-core do you have ? what's the output of 'kpsewhich hyphen.tex' ?
(In reply to Alexis Ballier from comment #1) > what version of texlive-core do you have ? [ebuild R #] app-text/texlive-core-2013 USE="X cjk tk xetex -doc -source" 0 kB I am doing a "clean install", removing all texlive packages and then emerging the 2013 versions. > what's the output of 'kpsewhich hyphen.tex' ? [blank]
(In reply to Jeroen Roovers from comment #2) do you have /usr/share/texmf-dist/tex/generic/hyphen/hyphen.tex ? $ kpsewhich hyphen.tex /usr/share/texmf-dist/tex/generic/hyphen/hyphen.tex $ equery belongs $(kpsewhich hyphen.tex) * Searching for /usr/share/texmf-dist/tex/generic/hyphen/hyphen.tex ... app-text/texlive-core-2013 (/usr/share/texmf-dist/tex/generic/hyphen/hyphen.tex) what version of kpathsea ? did you update your config files and run texmf-update?

Oddly, no: # ls -l /usr/share/texmf-dist/tex/generic/ total 4 drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Apr 12 16:51 dvips There is no `hyphen' subdir. > $ kpsewhich hyphen.tex > /usr/share/texmf-dist/tex/generic/hyphen/hyphen.tex > $ equery belongs $(kpsewhich hyphen.tex) > * Searching for /usr/share/texmf-dist/tex/generic/hyphen/hyphen.tex ... > app-text/texlive-core-2013 > (/usr/share/texmf-dist/tex/generic/hyphen/hyphen.tex) > > > > what version of kpathsea ? did you update your config files and run > texmf-update? I suppose I removed everything *2012 and started from scratch. The attached texlive-core build log doesn't seem to want to involve itself in installing hyphen.tex, and notes at the end: * Cannot run texmf-update for some reason. [snip] At that point, there is no `/usr/sbin/texmf-update'. In fact I still don't have it. :)

Weird. Please try after this commit: 03 Jul 2013; Alexis Ballier <aballier@gentoo.org> texlive-core-2013.ebuild: + Force grep -H behavior since we rely on this. Might fix bug #475626. + (if it works I'll also need to update texlive-module.eclass as you might have the same problem here) > > $ kpsewhich hyphen.tex > > /usr/share/texmf-dist/tex/generic/hyphen/hyphen.tex > > $ equery belongs $(kpsewhich hyphen.tex) > > * Searching for /usr/share/texmf-dist/tex/generic/hyphen/hyphen.tex ... > > app-text/texlive-core-2013 > > (/usr/share/texmf-dist/tex/generic/hyphen/hyphen.tex) > > > > > > > > what version of kpathsea ? did you update your config files and run > > texmf-update? > > I suppose I removed everything *2012 and started from scratch. note: I'll revbump tl-core if this fixes the bug
(In reply to Alexis Ballier from comment #6) > note: I'll revbump tl-core if this fixes the bug Even with those changes, texlive-basic still cannot find hyphen.tex. What should be installing that anyway?

This may have to do with a sed QA tool I use locally. Let me disable that and try again.
