Description Martin Wohlert 2013-06-27 08:27:21 UTC
Hello boys (and maybe girls)!

I have a root server in Germany hosted by Hetzner and I configured it to serve as a gentoo rsync and distfiles (full) server.

So, something about the server itself:

Domain: b-root-force.de
Hardware: Intel Core i7-3770 CPU @ 3.40GHz, 16 GB RAM, 2 x 3 TB HDD RAID-1
OS: Gentoo Linux of course :)
Network: 100 MBit/s

SYNC="rsync://b-root-force.de/gentoo-portage"
GENTOO_MIRRORS="http://gentoo.b-root-force.de"

rsync is limited to 30 connections. The distfiles are served via nodejs, not an apache or something.

The data center where the server is housed is located in Falkenberg, Germany, near Nuernberg.

And rsync is syncing every 30 minutes to rsync.de.gentoo.org and the distfiles all 4 hours to ftp.ussg.iu.edu.

And my server is mostly idle cause my homepage is not getting that high traffic. In background with lowest prio is Einstein@home running and teasing the CPU a bit for some months now. Everything's stable. :)

Downtime of the server is some minutes when I do kernel updates, now is 3.9.7 running. So once or twice a month there is a lil update.

Thanks for reading and greetings to all of you!

Network is soon going to be 200 MBit/s

Service seems to be discontinued, closing.
Comment 3 Martin Wohlert 2015-09-25 08:30:26 UTC
No, service is just temporary down for maintenance. Will be up again later this day.

I'm rebuilding the RAID right now.

Thanks for the information. I'll reopen the request, but please note that Germany as a well-covered area may not be getting any new mirrors soon.

All services are up again. portage-rsync and https-distfiles.

FYI

I'm migrating to new hardware. I'm planning the cutover sometime this week to happen. Then this service will have 1 GBit/s bandwidth.

More information will follow when it happened.
Comment 7 Martin Wohlert 2015-12-11 09:10:12 UTC
The cutover to the new hardware is done now. IP changed, so DNS update may take a while.

Bandwith increased to 1 GB/s... rsync connection limit increased to 50.

I want to inform you that I will stop my gentoo mirror. So this ticket can be closed. If at any time in the future there is a need for a mirror in Germany you can notify me.

Demand for mirrors is not large, so we do not need additional mirrors at this time. Thank you for your consideration.
