As I prepared this bug, I also tried the following: I re-installed gdal after modifying my /etc/portabe/package.use file with: # # 6/20/2013 jlpoole: added lotsa extras # sci-libs/gdal geos java mysql odbc perl postgres python sqlite I then successfully emerged postgis. Conclusion: the ebuild should verify that gdal was compiled with (I'm guessing now) postgres.
This bug may be changed to "works for me", but I think I'll leave it as is so the maintainer of the ebuild will have the benefit of my solution.
!!! Please attach the following file when seeking support: !!! /var/tmp/portage/dev-db/postgis-2.0.3/work/postgis-2.0.3/config.log Please do. Also, attach the entire build log.
Sorry, no can do as they were erased. Unfortunately, per my Comment #2 above, those logs are no longer available as when I tried emerging a second time (after re-emerging gdal with additional use flags), I achieved success and the logs would have been overwritten and then deleted by the successful install of postgis. The idea of the fix came up as I was submitting this bug; in hindsight I should have provided all the details before engaging in the fix.

I came to report the same bug. I'll attach logs and info from my system which is in a state prior to the OP's workaround.

This bug could use a better title to help avoid duplicates: dev-db/postgis-2.1.0: configure: error: could not find GDAL
