Description Matteo Settenvini 2004-04-09 12:50:24 UTC
Whenever I try to see a remote file with mplayerplug-in, the progress bar starts filling as expected. When the cache is ready to start displaying the video, the window with mplayer appears and playback begins.

Unfortunately, if the cached data is short, mplayer exit(0) from its execution before it has ended downloading all the video, so you'll never see what comes next, since mplayerplug-in won't continue with the download... moreover, reloading the page won't help.

This is clearer if watching a movie which isn't embedded in a web page, since you can keep an eye on the progress bar while mplayer is started in a new window (not inside mozilla).

Try going here : http://electricsheep.org/v2.4/gen/155/61739/sheep.mpg

Maybe it's a mplayer bug, and not a mplayerplug-in one, since I had some issues also with mplayer itself when visualizing remote files. If so, please correct the summary.
I've a good connection (ADSL 640k), and other programs don't have these issues (as xine, for example).

I tried on two different computers, three different connections (56k, ADSL 640k, 2,4M) on three different interfaces with different hardware. No firewalls active.

Using latest version of mplayer and mplayerplug-in (1.0_pre3-r5 and 2.45, respectively).

could you try 2.50 ?
Comment 2 Matteo Settenvini 2004-04-13 10:56:10 UTC
Yes, 2.50 "almost" fix this. 90% of times things go on well. But sometimes (with _long_ movie trailers, for example), it stops more or less at 75 per cent.

I'll try another couple of times with different videos from different servers, and I'll see if it is a random (server side) problem or something that repeats in time.

You'll get further feedback soon.

OK, the problem have slightly changed : it seems that if the player stops (because you hit the stop button, or the end of the downloaded portion is met while viewing it) the download will continue.
However, if you click on the "play" button again it will stop from fetching the data.

Anyway, if you know this, it's ok. You've just to wait for the end of the download before starting to play it again. Much better than 2.45, although not yet the best. But I'm a perfectionist. ;-)

Okay, I'm on the mplayerplug-in list and I think something like this went
by recently. Try version 2.66. If that doesn't fix it, you may want to try mplayerplug-in from cvs.

I have a cvs ebuild for debugging at:

http://dev.gentoo.org/~kanaka/mplayerplug-in/mplayerplug-in-cvs-0.1.ebuild

Please post the results (good or bad) here so that we can know where to pursue
this next.

Version 2.66 went ok doing a couple of tests. I think it fixes the problem.

(Instead, CVS version didn't work. Probably I've find an unlucky moment for a checkout :P )

I think that this can be marked resolved fixed.
