Same problem here.

Probably the error is with virtual/python-imaging-1
I masked it and problem went away.
Comment 2 Tom Wijsman (TomWij) (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2013-06-09 14:12:45 UTC
The virtual wants pillow, something on your system wants imaging; consider which packages you prefer and unmerge the others, if unmerging isn't sufficient you can resolt to masking. I would advise against masking the virtual, since that would disallow you from emerging quite some packages that depend on this.

On a side note; some people report that they can fix this by changing their PYTHON_TARGETS, this is because that changes the dependencies of the virtuals, though I would suggest to only do that if the PYTHON_TARGETS change makes sense.

There is no error with either of these packages, the packages you have on your system as well as you are trying to emerge want to have both installed; however, since they install the same thing, you need to pick one of both packages and get rid of the other packages as well as the hard dependencies on the other packages.

Masking virtual/python-imaging-1 leaves virtual/python-imaging-0
so the remark:
"that would disallow you from emerging quite some packages that depend on this." is not true.
I did an emerge -auDN world and everything is in order.

That merely depends on how much packages depend on specific versions, which may be subject to change in the future; workarounds are going to bite you at some point in the future, though it is considerably a good way to delay actually fixing it properly for now, which may not be possible due to some hard dependencies...
Comment 5 Andreas Proteus 2013-06-09 15:24:34 UTC
(In reply to Tom Wijsman (TomWij) from comment #4)

I had a closer look at the problem.
It is caused by hplip-3.13.5 which has RDEPEND
=virtual/python-imaging-1[${PYTHON_USEDEP}]
This in turn, for some reason, pulls in dev-python/pillow-2.0.0

Now, the following packages:
sci-libs/scipy-0.12.0
net-misc/tucan-0.3.9
media-gfx/fontypython-0.4.4

require dev-python/imaging which cannot coexist with pillow.
hence the impasse.

I apologize for my remark in #1 since the culprit is not virtual/python-imaging-1
but net-print/hplip-3.13.5.

Do you want me to file another bug report?
Comment 6 Mike Gilbert gentoo-dev 2013-06-09 16:41:25 UTC
(In reply to Andreas Proteus from comment #5)

Yes, if you run into packages which depend upon dev-python/imaging instead of the virtual please file a bug for those packages.

Also see bug 471488 which tracks packages that need to be fixed to work with dev-python/pillow.
Comment 7 Juergen Rose 2013-06-10 10:06:14 UTC
I have installed hplip-3.13.5 and scipy-0.12.0 too. But both seems to depend on virtual/python-imaging:

root@impala:/usr/local/portage/net-print(54)# grep -U11 imaging /usr/portage/net-print/hplip/hplip-3.13.5.ebuild
RDEPEND="${COMMON_DEPEND}
        >=app-text/ghostscript-gpl-8.71-r3
        >=dev-python/dbus-python-1.1.1-r1[${PYTHON_USEDEP}]
        policykit? (
                sys-auth/polkit
        )
        !minimal? (
                >=dev-python/pygobject-2.28.6-r53:2[${PYTHON_USEDEP}]
                kernel_linux? ( virtual/udev !<sys-fs/udev-114 )
                scanner? (
                        >=dev-python/reportlab-2.6[${PYTHON_USEDEP}]
                        >=virtual/python-imaging-1[${PYTHON_USEDEP}]
                        X? ( || (
...

root@impala:/usr/local/portage/net-print(55)# grep -U2 imaging /usr/portage/sci-libs/scipy/scipy-0.12.0.ebuild

RDEPEND="${CDEPEND}
        virtual/python-imaging[${PYTHON_USEDEP}]"
...

'emerge -pt --update --newuse --deep --with-bdeps=y @world' shows that dev-python/imaging should be installed as dependency of [science-overlay]sci-chemistry/mgltools-1.5.6:

root@impala:/usr/local/portage(64)# grep -U6 imaging /var/lib/layman/science/sci-chemistry/mgltools/mgltools-1.5.6.ebuild
RDEPEND="${PLUG_DEP}
        ${PYTHON_DEPS}
        dev-lang/tk
        sci-libs/msms
        dev-python/pmw[${PYTHON_USEDEP}]
        dev-python/simpy[${PYTHON_USEDEP}]
        dev-python/imaging[tk,${PYTHON_USEDEP}]
        dev-python/numpy[${PYTHON_USEDEP}]"
...

I could not yet find any patch, which removes the dependency [science-overlay]sci-chemistry/mgltools-1.5.6 on dev-python/imaging. Should I file a separate bug report for [science-overlay]sci-chemistry/mgltools?

Yes.
Comment 9 Juergen Rose 2013-06-12 07:03:34 UTC
BTW., the /var/lib/layman/science/sci-chemistry/mgltools/mgltools-1.5.6.ebuild has changed, it now has a virtual/python-imaging dependency.

 But nevroot@caiman:/root(10)# grep -U6 imaging /var/lib/layman/science/sci-chemistry/mgltools/mgltools-1.5.6.ebuild
RDEPEND="${PLUG_DEP}
        ${PYTHON_DEPS}
        dev-lang/tk
        sci-libs/msms
        dev-python/pmw[${PYTHON_USEDEP}]
        dev-python/simpy[${PYTHON_USEDEP}]
        virtual/python-imaging[tk,${PYTHON_USEDEP}]
        dev-python/numpy[${PYTHON_USEDEP}]"
DEPEND="${RDEPEND}"
...

But nevertheless 'emerge --update --newuse --deep --with-bdeps=y @world' wants to install dev-python/imaging-1.1.7-r4 as a dependency of mgltools.

root@caiman:/root(9)# emerge -pt --update --newuse --deep --with-bdeps=y @world

These are the packages that would be merged, in reverse order:
...
[nomerge       ] sci-chemistry/mgltools-1.5.6
[nomerge       ]  virtual/python-imaging-1
[ebuild  N     ]   dev-python/imaging-1.1.7-r4  USE="examples jpeg lcms tiff tk truetype zlib -doc -scanner {-test}" PYTHON_TARGETS="python2_7 -python2_5 -python2_6"
...
[blocks B      ] dev-python/imaging ("dev-python/imaging" is blocking dev-python/pillow-2.0.0-r1)
[blocks B      ] dev-python/pillow ("dev-python/pillow" is blocking dev-python/imaging-1.1.7-r4)
Comment 10 Juergen Rose 2013-06-12 09:02:23 UTC
I filed also a mgltools bug https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=473066 , but it looks if not mgltools but gimagereader and openshot from the sabayon overlay are responsible for dependence on dev-python/imaging.
