emerge went fine. now everytime I start X i get this message:

---------------------
Error activating XKB configuration.
Probably internal X server problem.

X server version data:
Gentoo Linux (X.Org X11 6.7.0, revision r0)

If you report this situation as a bug, please include:
- The result of xprop -root | grep XKB
- The result of gconftool-2 -R /desktop/gnome/peripherals/keyboard/xkb
-----------------

here's the output from xprop:

_XKB_RULES_NAMES_BACKUP(STRING) = "xorg", "thinkpad", "de", "", ""
_XKB_RULES_NAMES(STRING) = "xorg", "thinkpad", "de", "", ""

here's gconftool-2 output:

what's wrong with these settings?

Comment 5 Andreas Kotowicz 2004-04-14 09:23:48 UTC
libxklavier 1.02 fixes this problem.
Comment 6 Donnie Berkholz (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-04-14 10:46:44 UTC
Super! If you have any other issues, please file a new bug.
Comment 7 Ernst Sjöstrand 2004-04-29 01:09:01 UTC
I also have this problem, and have been running libxklavier 1.0.2 all the time!
New installation, running xorg-x11 and has never had xfree installed.

Comment 8 Ernst Sjöstrand 2004-04-30 09:02:42 UTC
Oh, I see. You need xorg ruleset, not xfree.
How about a not about that in the ebuild?
It's that and the fonts that's different in the conf file.
Comment 9 Guillaume Destuynder (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-05-17 04:12:46 UTC
I still have this bug here. I googled and don't understand that I still get it. Here's my conf:

_XKB_RULES_NAMES_BACKUP(STRING) = "xorg", "pc105", "fr", "", ""
_XKB_RULES_NAMES(STRING) = "xorg", "pc105", "fr", "", ""

 layouts = [fr]

 options = []

[ebuild   R   ] x11-libs/libxklavier-1.02
[ebuild   R   ] x11-base/xorg-x11-6.7.0

I re emerger libxklavier many times
As you can see my layout is xorg too
Comment 10 Spider (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-05-18 23:54:39 UTC
okay, appears I have the same issue, quite annoying really.

libxklavier 1.02 - does not fix my problem

grep -i xfree /etc/X11/xorg.conf
returns nothing

xprop -root | grep XKB
_XKB_RULES_NAMES_BACKUP(STRING) = "xorg", "pc105", "se", "", ""
_XKB_RULES_NAMES(STRING) = "xorg", "pc105", "se", "", ""

spider@Darkmere> gconftool-2 -R /desktop/gnome/peripherals/keyboard/xkb
 layouts = [se]
 model = pc105
 overrideSettings = false
 options = []

Comment 11 Donnie Berkholz (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-06-08 00:22:53 UTC
Please try the latest xorg-x11.

`xdpyinfo | grep vendor` should return "vendor string: Gentoo Linux (The X.Org Foundation 6.7.0, revision r0-1.0)"

The "-1.0" on the end is what you're looking for.

grep PATCH_VER /path/to/ebuild should also return 1.0.
Comment 12 Corto 2004-06-11 14:33:54 UTC
Hi there !

I've the same problem with 6.7.0 & 6.7.1-r1 versions.

Try commenting out the XkbRules line.
Comment 14 Andreas Laestadius 2004-06-17 10:40:46 UTC
Hate to say 'me too' but I also get this message;
1) Every time I login to X/Gnome
2) Everytime I try to set an alterantive keyboard in the gnome "Keyboard" menu

This keeps me from switching keyboard layouts, unless anyone know of another way
to do it.

I have never used XFree on this install and I have installed the latest
packages as of 2004 Jun 17, amd64 (stable).

@ Donnie Berkholz : it doesn't change anything
Comment 16 Stephane Loeuillet 2004-09-11 03:59:31 UTC
does xorg 6.8.0 solve it ?
Comment 17 Tom Martin (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-09-25 02:29:37 UTC
As far as I can tell, no. I just got the same problem after upgrading from 6.8.0 to 6.8.0-r1. I can't find an immediate solution. For me, compiled keymaps are not copied across to /var/lib/xkb/. grep -i xfree /etc/X11/xorg.conf returns nothing, xprop returns:

_XKB_RULES_NAMES_BACKUP(STRING) = "xorg", "pc104", "gb", "", ""
_XKB_RULES_NAMES(STRING) = "xorg", "pc104", "gb", "", ""

C.F. bug #65142

This is RESO, however the user seems to be having a similar problem to me (and the others here) but I couldn't make head nor tail of his solution.

It's very strange how this happened all of a sudden when upgrading to 6.8.0-r1. Now I've tried downgrading to 6.8.0 (I didn't keep a .tbz2, I guess I'm just silly :-)), and still no joy. This is quite annoying because I need to use my Alt Gr switch very often for other languages. Also, my scroll lock and super keys are broken.
Comment 18 Donnie Berkholz (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-09-25 17:43:30 UTC
What's ownership/permissions on /var/lib/, /var/lib/xkb/ and /var/tmp/?
Comment 19 Tom Martin (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-09-26 01:50:00 UTC
/var/tmp/ = drwxrwxrwt portage:portage
/var/lib/ = drwxr-xr-x root:root
/var/lib/xkb = drwxr-xr-x root:root

This morning I also tried emerge -C'ing xorg-x11, wiping the stuff in /var/tmp/portage, then remerging. No luck.
Comment 20 Donnie Berkholz (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-09-26 10:42:04 UTC
Umlikely that will fix it, but your /var/tmp is wrong. It should be same permissions, owned by root:root. You hit a bug in one of the 51_pre's (bug #56665).
Comment 21 Tom Martin (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-09-27 13:54:12 UTC
Yeah, I already got roger55 to give me the ownerships and perms of his (working) /var/lib, /var/tmp and /var/lib/xkb and found this. I've changed my ownerships to root:root, wiped out
my old /var/tmp/portage/xorg-x11-6.8.0-r1 for the hell of it and remerged. Still no joy.
Comment 22 Steven Hay 2004-10-26 18:27:29 UTC
See recent entries in Bug 47243.
Comment 23 HARGITAI Gabor 2004-11-18 10:11:17 UTC
I ugpraded today to xorg-x11-6.8.0-r3, and I still have the problem. I never had xfree on my gentoo system. I have a Microsoft Internet keyboard with Great Britain layout, I want to use gb and hu layouts.

xprop -root | grep XKB
_XKB_RULES_NAMES_BACKUP(STRING) = "xorg", "pc101", "us", "", ""
_XKB_RULES_NAMES(STRING) = "xorg", "pc105", "gb", "", "grp:alts_toggle"

gconftool-2 -R /desktop/gnome/peripherals/keyboard/xkb
 layouts = [gb,hu       l2_102_qwertz_dot]
 model = microsoftinet
 overrideSettings = false
 options = [grp grp:alts_toggle]
 update_handlers = []

I have these problem since Fedora Core, and I could make it on Novell Desktop 9 last week too. I created my xorg.conf with xorgconfig. Previousli I put the XkbDisable line into xorg.conf and it worked, I hade my layouts, now it doesn't work. I have libxklavier-1.04.

# Any number of ServerLayout sections may be present. Each describes
# the way multiple screens are organised. A specific ServerLayout
# section may be specified from the X server command line with the
# "-layout" option. In the absence of this, the first section is used.
# When now ServerLayout section is present, the first Screen section
# is used alone.

Section "ServerLayout"

# The Identifier line must be present
    Identifier  "Simple Layout"

# Each Screen line specifies a Screen section name, and optionally

Some update: it looks, like it's a hungaryan layout specific problem, I can any other layout (I tried about 10 different), all works without errors. And this problem exists on Fedora Core 3 too.

Okay, this bug does not occur in 6.8.0-r2, however it does in 6.8.0-r3 for me. I strongly doubt it is only for hungarian keymaps, as suggested above.

I was able to fix this on my machine by copying /usr/X11R6/bin/xkbcomp to /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xkb/xkbcomp. According to epm -ql xorg-x11, this file should have existed, but the ebuild didn't create it. The problem started occurring for me when I rebuilt xorg-x11-6.8.0-r3 (The first build worked fine.). Perhaps the install doesn't work properly if a preexisting xkbcomp is installed.

Ollie, you're hitting bug #41743. So is anyone else with the 0-byte xkbcomp in one of the locations.

There are a bunch of different bugs on this bug -- One of them which is known is that the Hungarian and Canadian layouts can't be combined with anything else. The original bug was fixed long ago with libxklavier 1.02. The third is the 0-byte /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xkb/xkbcomp.

Tom, you're encountering yet another problem unless yours is mentioned in the above list. Is it?
Comment 28 Tom Martin (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-12-09 08:30:25 UTC
Donnie,

Nope, it's definitely a 0-byte xkbcomp.

As I said before, this does not occur with 6.8.0-r2, and there seems to be a lot of xkb-related changes in the -r3 ebuild. Is there a possibility they could be causing it?

Donnie,

Sorry about that, I just read the other bug. I'll try rebuilding xorg with the fix.

Thanks a lot for your help with this.

I'm closing this as FIXED because the original bug is fixed, the 0-byte xkbcomp is a duplicate of bug #41743 and the hu, ca layouts bug is upstream.

If anyone wishes to add another bug to this list or further pursue any of the above bugs, open a _new_ bug to track it.
