Description Steve Milo 2004-04-06 14:14:10 UTC
I'm running a dual Opteron on a s2880 K8s using an Adaptec U39160 for both my CDROM and HD controller. No IDE devices. Two memory sticks at a mere 1gig.

The CD is a Universal 2004.0 Gentoo AMD64. I choose the smp kernel version and the splash screen comes up good enough. But after a few seconds it dumps me into a command line. Apparently the machine cant mount /newroot/dev/cdroms/* nor /newroot/dev/ide/cd/*.

I have tried the gentoo kernel the smp doscsi kernel and a few other combinations with no success. At the command line I tried modprobe aix79xx and a few other modprobes that would load the driver. Lsmod reveals that indeed no scsi drivers are being loaded. Nonetheless if there is a combination that isnt apparent while going over the options at the boot prompt let me know and I'll give them a shot.

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Boot from a Universal 2004.0 CD using a dual Opterons on a Tyan K8s MD with an Adaptec U39160 for both your CDROM and HD controller exclusively. No IDE devices.
Actual Results:
Drops me into a shell giving me an opportunity to 'fix my shit'. However I
tried 'fixing my shit' with limited success.

Expected Results:
Hoping the 'shit' would be fixed giving me a chance to give Gentoo AMD64 a whirl
on a dual Opteron machine. In other words the expected results should permit me
to install Gentoo.

I believe its a blocker for the most part, I scanned over the forum and looked
thorugh the technotes. There doesnt seem to be anything that will let me
install with a Universal CD with the above configuration. However if this is a
seriously old bug which I missed please send me the link for the fix. I have
seen users with IDE devices and dual Opterons having trouble or an IDE CDROM and
a SCSI HD. But I havent found anyone with the configuration I have outlined
experiencing trouble. Thanks for your help.

I am adding aic79xxx (320 support) and aic7xxx (160 support) to the kernel for 2004.1... There should be a new liveCD out in my devspace tonight that you can test: http://dev.gentoo.org/~jhuebel/2004.1/

Comment 3 Steve Milo 2004-04-22 13:57:42 UTC
The machine boots off the CD and appears to load all the necessary modules. Once the machine finishes booting up and loading the modules it drops me into root shell. This seems to be working for the most part, I dont recieve any excessive errors.
I can configure my network connection successfully. However when I execute fdisk using /dev/sdc the error message I recieve is 'Unable to open /dev/sdc'.
I just tried fdisk /dev/scsi/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/disk, with that command I was able to open up the partitions with fdisk.
Is the way its supposed to be?
Comment 4 Steve Milo 2004-04-22 13:59:14 UTC
Nevermind, I have to use fdisk /dev/sda to view the partitions.

Thanks

fixed
Comment 6 Chris Gianelloni (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-03-25 11:24:37 UTC
Moving these so we can remove the "Install CD" component from "Gentoo Linux".

I apologize to everyone for this spam, but according to the bugzilla developers,
this is the only reasonable way to do this.
