Created attachment 346962 [details] The ebuild for www-plugins/okularplugin-1.0.0 This bug is for adding the attached ebuild to Sunrise. Please assign to maintainer-wanted@gentoo.org as per http://overlays.gentoo.org/proj/sunrise/wiki/HowToCommit
I'm curious, in what way is this different to www-plugins/kpartsplugin? kpartsplugin embeds other KDE tools besides Okular as well.
I didn't know about kpartsplugin. As far as I can see, kpartsplugin is a more general plugin for the same job. The only advantages of okularplugin that I can see are that kpartsplugin takes a little bit more vertical screen space (menu bar + other stuff) and doesn't display the nice loading bar as okularplugin does. However, these are minor issues. I've pointed okularplugin's developer to this bug so that he can add his opinion. From my point of view, if there are no major differences, then kpartsplugin covers all use cases of okularplugin, so it's not so important to have okularplugin.
Okularplugin is intended for embedded viewing of pdfs (and other filetypes supported by okular) in the browser. I see okularplugin as a replacement for the builtin pdf viewers or for acrobat reader's browser plugin. Therefore okularplugin is especially optimized for that purpose. In contrast kpartsplugin is a more generic solution that for example displays libre office / open office documents in the browser, too. In summing up, okularplugin has the following advantages: - out of the box configured toolbar optimized for viewing pdfs - optimized layout: smaller toolbar, no menu bar - only views filetypes like pdf or ps. That makes it somewhat lightweighter. - shows loading progress while downloading files My recommendation is: If you want a plugin for viewing only pdfs and related filetypes embedded in the browser, use okularplugin. If you want to view many more filetypes like libre office documents embedded in the browser, use kpartsplugin.
I've tried using kpartsplugin for a while on my laptop, but I was annoyed by the reduced vertical space available for PDF, and I switched back to okularplugin after about a week. The new release, okularplugin-1.0.1 now reduces the waste of vertical space even more, by dropping the status bar. Now it's as compact as it can get. So, I'd still like to see this going into Sunrise. I'll post the new ebuild into #gentoo-sunrise today, to get some feedback.
okularplugin is now in Sunrise, see: http://git.overlays.gentoo.org/gitweb/?p=proj/sunrise-reviewed.git;a=tree;f=www-plugins/okularplugin

i wish to see this in portage libreoffice pdf support is just plain horrible.
Removing kde from cc. Seems nobody from the herd is willing to maintain this.
Hello, everyone. It seems that at least one ebuild related to this bug exists in the Sunrise overlay at the moment. However, I have to regretfully announce that after a long inactivity period the Sunrise project has been discontinued and the related overlay will be eventually removed. For this reason, I'd like to ask you to reevaluate the ebuilds and consider moving them. If you'd like to maintain a package from Sunrise in Gentoo, please take a look at our Proxy Maintainers [1] project. Please make sure to take ebuilds from the unreviewed developer Sunrise repository [2] rather than the -reviewed one, since the latter has not been updated for over a year. While at it, please note that: 1. Adding a package to Gentoo requires declaring yourself as an active maintainer for it. All bugs regarding the package will be assigned to you, and you will be expected to maintain it. 2. Some packages may not be suitable for addition anymore. While there's no strong rules that would prevent you from adding a package, it may be a bad idea to add old-unmaintained packages that will shortly result in a large number of bugs reported with no solution. If that is the case, please close the bug as RESOLVED/OBSOLETE to make it easier to find packages worth adding. 3. Some of the bugs were already closed as WONTFIX/OBSOLETE/... while the relevant ebuild was kept in Sunrise. If you disagree with the original decision, you still can add the ebuild via proxy-maint. 4. Pleaes note that many of the Sunrise ebuilds are old and may be buggy. If you decide to move them, please make sure to update/clean them up. The proxy-maint team will also review your ebuilds, therefore making sure they land in Gentoo in good quality. Once again, thank you for your contribution. We hope that you will still want to contribute to Gentoo, through proxy-maint or otherwise.
