As per http://blog.flameeyes.eu/2013/02/packaging-epson-s-scanners-drivers this is the ebuild for the iscan plugin for my new epson scanner. Package name follows upstream; they seem to be very inconsistent about their naming. I tried installing the firmware to /usr/share/iscan, but the .so must have some paths hardcoded; it would only work if I used /usr/share/esci instead.
