The ATI-provided binary FireGL 8700/8800 X drivers work fine with a Radeon 8500, with DRI/OpenGL. Having an ebuild for it would be really helpful, as the driver comes in rpm form. Installation isn't very hard, but involves many steps: 1. Get the rpm from here: http://www.ati.com:80/support/products/workstation/firegl8800/linux/firegl8800linuxdrivers.html?cboOS=LinuxXFree86&cboProducts=Fire+GL8800&cmdNext=GO%21 2. Extract the rpm (I used alien on my debian box - I can provide a tgz for that rpm if needed) 3. Build a kernel module in the archive's /lib/modules/fglr200/build_mod/ using the provided make.sh 4. Copy multiple object files to their correct location 5. Run fglrxconfig 6. Enjoy fast 3d (yay!) using binary-only video drivers (not as much yay) The whole process took me less than 15 minutes. Now, I don't know how to do ebuilds, I don't think I have enough time to learn how to do it now, but I can test it if somebody is kind enough to create the ebuild.
We need guys with ATI's :)
I might try doing this one night soon... I looked at some other binary ebuilds, and some used rpm2targz, and other rpm2cpio. Is there any reason to choose one over another? (Don't read this as if I'm assigning the bug to myself yet, though :)
Anything new on the radeon8500 side of X things? what about the daily builds for the r200 found on the dri website? If they work, they are of the same us as this.
My friend tried ati-drivers, it does the same thing as I wanted this to do. Please close this.
