In the "Booting the PPC LiveCD(s)" section of the handbook there aren't any instructions for OldWorld PowerPCs besides "run an OldWorld bootloader like BootX or quik". A small section on downloading and setting BootX up would be helpfully to users who are new to running linux on the PowerPC. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce:
If I had an oldworld-machine, I could test and add it. Or can you share your experiences with BootX, so that we can add an appropriate section?
I can write up some instructions. Would you like me to post it in plain text here or whould you like a patch to the hb-install-ppc-medium.xml doc?
If you can provide a patch that would be even easier, but if you prefer plain text that's ok as well - it's not that hard for us to transform to GuideXML anyway. But I'd rather have such instructions tested before committing to CVS, so it can take a while before they are inserted (unless a PPC developer gives his "ok" to it).
Created attachment 29051 [details, diff] OldWorld Macintosh Boot Instructions I've attached a patch for hb-install-ppc-medium.xml that adds instructions for using BootX to boot the livecd. I've tested them and the appear to work on my system.
Lars, can you verify and apply?
The text still needs some fixes (especially spelling mistakes). Furthermore I think, we should create sub-sections with booting on NewWorld machines as default and as alternative the BootX-method on OldWorld machines (like the bootloader description later in the handbook). Sven, on which handbook should I apply the patch? The real one or the one in the draft-section?
If the changes are "immediately" usable (i.e. with the current release - not 2004.1) then you can apply to the official handbook. Otherwise the one in draft/ should be used.
Your instructions are now implemented in the 2004.2 handbook. Thanks a lot for your work!
Those BootX really help, but since it is possible to install Gentoo on an OldWorld Mac, shouldn't something like "Power Macintosh 7500-9650" be added to the "OldWorld machines" section of the Hardware Requirements box on http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/2004.3/handbook-ppc.xml?part=1&chap=2#doc_chap1 ? This part of the document makes it sound like OldWorld Macs won't work, but farther down on the page, it tells how to install on one.
