Description Billy DeVincentis 2013-04-07 16:54:50 UTC
In the last couple of days there have been a bunch of updates - one of them has created a problem starting vmware as a regular use. Possibilities are the libpng update, the freetype locale patch or something to do with kde 4.10.2

Reproducible: Always

USE="cups doc (multilib) ovftool server vix vmware-tools" ABI_X86="64"

here is what happens if I start vmware-workstation from a termninal as regular user

billydv@Linux1 ~ $ /opt/vmware/bin/vmware
Aborted
billydv@Linux1 ~ $

here is what happens if I do the same as root (it does start)

Linux1 billydv # /opt/vmware/bin/vmware

Comment 3 Billy DeVincentis 2013-04-08 02:03:46 UTC
Just wanted to say that neither downgrading libpng nor deleting the locale patch for freetype made any difference. I will try a world rebuild tonight and see if that changes anything.

app-emulation/vmware-workstation-9.0.2.1031769 was built with the following:
USE="cups doc (multilib) ovftool vmware-tools -server -vix" ABI_X86="64"
Comment 6 Manfred Knick 2013-04-08 16:15:36 UTC
I ran vmware-workstation in XFCE.

Since yesterday with updates mentioned by OP,
it will neither start as user nor as root.

What gets started always is:

##### pts/3 Sl 0:00 /opt/vmware/lib/vmware/bin/vmware-tray poweredOn

None additional logs, error messages etc. to be found.

Re-compiling (-e world) did not help.

Re-building kernels did not help -
neither 3.8.5 nor 3.8.6 .

Compiling kdebase-meta in addition to kdebase-runtime-meta did not help:

# equery list kde*meta
[IP-] [ ] kde-base/kdebase-meta-4.10.2:4
[IP-] [ ] kde-base/kdebase-runtime-meta-4.10.2:4
Comment 7 Mark R. Pariente 2013-04-08 17:02:55 UTC
I also tried a few things - I noticed that the OP was also using linux 3.8.6 so I tried booting old kernels, including 3.8.5, 3.8.4, 3.8.3 etc. no dice, the issue doesn't seem to be due to kernel.

One of the recent upgrades was to icu (=> 51.1), which required libxml2 to be recompiled. I was wondering if that had any effect so I tried the following (none of which fixed the issue):

- downgrade icu to 50.1.2 + revdep-rebuild
- compile icu-51.1 + revdep-rebuild with gcc 4.6.3
- compile icu-50.1.2 + revdep-rebuild with gcc 4.6.3

So after all that, I still haven't figured out what is going on. An interesting observation is that, on a fresh boot, 'vmware' crashes without even showing a window on first launch attempt - the terminal log contains xml parsing errors. Subsequent launches of 'vmware' result in the window being shown and stuck at "Loading.." I haven't been able to figure out what it is that causes the change in behavior between first launch and subsequent launches, I tried clearing up the /tmp/vmware-<user> directory, killing all vmware-* processes, reloading all vmware* kernel modules to no avail.

NOPE : not sufficient - at least not in my case:

# equery list gtkmm
[IP-] [ ] dev-cpp/gtkmm-2.24.2:2.4

that's exactly the current default which I have.

Sorry.
Comment 14 Jay Pfeifer 2013-04-08 21:03:06 UTC
Ok. I had the same issue as the original poster and it fixed it for me. I had emerged in 2.24.3 on 20130407 but decided to get on kernel 3.8.6 today and thus noticed the "aborted" issues after the reboot.

Might want to use strace to debug more. That is how I found my issue.

ie.: strace -f /opt/vmware/bin/vmware > vmware-debug.txt 2>&1

if I run (even as root) :

   strace -f /opt/vmware/bin/vmware > vmware-debug.txt 2>&1

this does _not_ finish by itself,
I have to stop it with ^C.

Around line 233178, you find the last "normal" open/close of

   open("/opt/vmware/lib/vmware/share/icons/hicolor/16x16/actions/vmware-component-download-inactive.png", O_RDONLY) = 24

Afterwards, only openat will follow :

   openat(AT_FDCWD, "/var/run/vmware", O_RDONLY|O_NONBLOCK|O_DIRECTORY|O_CLOEXEC <unfinished ...>

Even after more than 5 min, again and again:

openat(AT_FDCWD, "/var/run/vmware", O_RDONLY|O_NONBLOCK|O_DIRECTORY|O_CLOEXEC <unfinished ...>

<... recvfrom resumed> 0x7fe86731eac4, 4096, 0, 0, 0) = -1 EAGAIN (Resource temporarily unavailable)

<... openat resumed> ) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory)

which does not exist, indeed.
Comment 24 Bartosz Brachaczek 2013-04-10 01:24:32 UTC
I had a similar problem with vmware-player - it was receiving sigsegv on any attempt to run it, no matter by what user. Downgrading gtkmm:2.4 to 2.24.2 helped here too.
Comment 25 Manfred Knick 2013-04-13 19:45:47 UTC
$ uname -a
Linux diego 3.8.7 #2 SMP Sat Apr 13 19:45:04 CEST 2013 x86_64 Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E31275 @ 3.40GHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux

Upgrading kernel to 3.8.7,
strace now finishes - as root as well as user - aborting.

In both cases, repeatably the last success is "inform the tray":

[pid 5283] mknod("/tmp/vmware-manfred/vmware-tray-:0-sp", S_IFIFO|0600) = -1 EEXIST (File exists)
[pid 5283] open("/tmp/vmware-manfred/vmware-tray-:0-sp", O_WRONLY|O_NONBLOCK) = 23
[pid 5283] write(23, "poweredOn", 9) = 9
[pid 5283] close(23) = 0

Directly afterwards, all threads of the group are being closed:

[pid 5283] munmap(0x7f7be0bfc000, 9609648) = 0
[pid 5283] munmap(0x7f7bd27b8000, 9609648) = 0
[pid 5283] exit_group(0) = ?
[pid  5296] +++ exited with 0 +++
+++ exited with 0 +++

QUESTION to those with a working set-up:
If you run vmware with strace,
what is the next action following in the log after above "inform the tray" ?
Thanks in advance.
