I got bitten by a 2+-year old bug (Bug 331445) in net-misc/vpnc that was at that time fixed in an unstable version, no stable version with the fix exists yet. So please stabilize a version >=0.5.3_p451.

I tried 0.5.3_p527 and it fixed my issue.
