Gentoo crashes each time I try to boot the smp kernel on livecd version 2004.0 on my dual pentium III 500. It occurs when scanning for devices after it has detected the first cpu after all the 'okays' check list.
Can you try booting with the "nodetect" boot option? Also, please provide the exact output you get...
I have simmular bug.. I tried booting smp-kernel with various options - mostly it stopped while detecting hotplug-devices. ones smp-kernel booted, but don't find my nic (mii/pcnet32) and it also wasn't possible to load modules working by hand. the box I tried to boot the smp-kernel is a hp kayak xu (dual xeon 550) with two scsi-contollers ... maybe this is the problem?!? after this problems I tried the normal gentoo-kernel (without options) an it is running with working hd and nic ... but only one cpu ...
I'm having a similar issue with a dual processor Xeon P3/933. The - nodetect enables the smp kernel to boot. The non smp kernel seems to work fine. It will be a few days before I can try anything more.
Same problem with Dell PowerEdge 2450 - dual PIII/600 Hangs on hotplugging. It boots with the standart kernel. I also tried to boot smp nodetect and it works OK. after that I tried modprobe eepro100, and the module loads ok, and works ok. I had a network. So it seems that the problem is not with the module itself. Hope that helps for the investigation of the problem. Please ask if you need additional info. Sunny
We're definitely working on these problems. There's been some problems on the LiveCD's with hotplug and SMP.
Would all of you guys please test the CDs in http://dev.gentoo.org/~wolf31o2/releng and report into bug #51396 any bugs that you find with it? Also, be sure that a bug you find hasn't already been reported. I am going to mark this as RESOLVED-FIXED, since I believe that the new LiveCD solves these problems.
I tried the 2004.1 release and it worked fine for me. I apologize I should have update this a coule of weeks ago. If you would still like me to test the 2004.2 release let me know.
Please do and report into bug #51396 any errors you find... also, I'll be putting up a new CD today, most likely
I receive error message /bin/ash: can't access tty; job control turned off The above happens when booting smp or smp-nofb or gentoo.
Carol, you get that problem booting which CD?
