Description Harris Landgarten 2013-03-16 02:33:51 UTC
after upgrading to clutter-1.13.8 and cogl-1.13.4 and rebuilding mutter gnome-shell and other broken programs and rebooting I could not sign in to GDM or Gnome because the keyboard and mouse click were unresponsive. Mouse movement worked and the keyboard worked fine outside of gnome or gdm.

Downgrading to clutter-1.12.2 and cogl-1.12.2 fixes the problem.

I confirm this issue
After click to username in gdm - it hangs.

Starting session via startx do not help. Activities, alt+F2, clicking to username - all of this hanging session.

Downgrading this libs and rebuilding dependencies resolved issue

I confirm the issue, but when downgrading to clutter-1.12.2, programs like evolution or empathy don't start, they die with:

(evolution:14991): Gdk-ERROR **: The program 'evolution' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadValue (integer parameter out of range for operation)'.
  (Details: serial 191 error_code 2 request_code 131 minor_code 47)
  (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the GDK_SYNCHRONIZE environment
variable to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)
Trappe pour point d'arrêt et de trace

So I'm in an in between state, but hey, it's ~arch, isn't it?

lots of things are dependent on cogl and the api changed with the new version. You have to run revdep-build or cave fix-linkage if you use paludis.

Nope, this is beyond ~arch - overlay is considered experimental ;)

tried again with clutter-1.13.10 today with same result. No keyboard or mouse clicks after clicking on my username in GDM.

Switching to a VT works and so does the keyboard.

Downgrading to clutter-1.12.2 with clutter 1.12.2 fixes the problem.

I suspect the new cogl is the problem but the only thing I can find in a log are a string of:

(gnome-shell:6903): Cogl-WARNING **: shmget failed

which may or may not be related to this problem. I am running nvidia-drivers so if everyone else is too that might be the cause.
Comment 6 Michael Hampicke 2013-03-21 09:03:12 UTC
I'm on ati-drivers, so it's not a driver problem. Downgrading cogl fixed the problem for me as well. There is a new cogl in portage today, but I haven't tried it out yet.

I had exact the same problem and downgrading to clutter-1.12.2 helped me to.
Comment 8 Harris Landgarten 2013-04-05 16:31:36 UTC
I upgrade to gnome-3.8 which is now masked in the tree and that fixed everything. Been running 3.8 for a week with no important issues and much better stability
