This is actually a problem in sys-devel/boost-m4 introduced in bug #460362.
Emerging =media-gfx/povray-3.7.0_rc7 with =sys-devel/boost-m4-0.3_pre121130 is successful but with =sys-devel/boost-m4-0.3 failed.
Thank you guys for the hints. I can state Victors last comment and so I will mask boost-m4-0.3 now for myself.
It looks like a -Wl,--as-needed bug in the fix for bug #460362: https://github.com/binki/boost.m4/commit/ee15a2a951ca347da2b56c7cec462b727e42e9d5#L0R412 Command line for the LINK_IFELSEish call that worked: x86_64-pc-linux-gnu-g++ -o conftest -O2 -pipe -m64 -pthread -D__BINKI_TRACER_DCXDELLLAPPY -DPOVLIBDIR=\"/usr/share/povray\" -DPOVCONFDIR=\"/etc/povray\" -Wl,-O1 -Wl,--as-needed -m64 -L/usr/lib conftest.o -lboost_system-mt -pthread Failing commandline from the -R (first) test: x86_64-pc-linux-gnu-g++ -o conftest -O2 -pipe -m64 -pthread -D__BINKI_TRACER_DCXDELLLAPPY -DPOVLIBDIR=\"/usr/share/povray\" -DPOVCONFDIR=\"/etc/povray\" -Wl,-O1 -Wl,--as-needed -m64 -lboost_system-mt -L/usr/lib -Wl,-R,/usr/lib conftest.o -pthread The -Wl,--as-needed switch requires -lboost_system-mt to be in LIBS instead of LDFLAGS so that it comes after conftest.o in gcc’s commandline. I’ll work with upstream to fix this. I’ll plan to create a patched boost-m4-0.4_pre20130319 when I get the chance. Sorry for the delay.
Pending upstream action. @Gentoo bug reporters: Please read the following lines that portage prints out when such failures as this happen: !!! Please attach the following file when seeking support: !!! /var/tmp/portage/media-gfx/povray-3.7.0_rc7/work/povray-3.7.0_rc7_build/config.log * ERROR: media-gfx/povray-3.7.0_rc7 failed (configure phase): * econf failed That would have helped me to start identifying where the bug is while I was still waiting for unstable boost to emerge so that I could reproduce the issue locally ;-). And not all bugs are reliably reproducable like this one, so often more information, especially information portage explicitly requests, will not hurt ;-).
+*boost-m4-0.4 (18 Mar 2013) + + 18 Mar 2013; Nathan Phillip Brink <binki@gentoo.org> +boost-m4-0.4.ebuild, + -boost-m4-0.3.ebuild: + Bump to boost-m4-0.4, fixing LDFLAGS=-Wl,--as-needed which was broken in + boost-m4-0.3. Fixes bug #461748. Please verify again that boost-m4-0.4 works. Thanks for the bug :-).
That version works
