The only KDE/GNOME CD we had was deleted accidentally when infrastructure was cleaning up experimental/ -- the handbook references it here: http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook.xml?part=1&chap=2#doc_chap2 I don't know if it's going to return or not.
Thanks, I've updated the instructions not to reference these LiveCDs.
The cd is -definitely- going to return, but I can't give an eta for obvious reasons (some of them mentioned below). I would like to see one somewhere between 2004.1 and 2004.2, but do not take me on my word. The original cd is still available on http://www.metadistribution.org/gentoo/ but note that it is not bootable if the user has ever had OS X 10.2.8 installed. (Thank you Apple) This cd is also not bootable on G5. There are specs for a kde-gnomecd in catalyst. The reason for not having an released one yet, is because we are still in the process of configuring a set of kernels that will boot G3-G4-G5 (everything) and allow X to be used. The G3-G4-G5 pars was solved by 2004.0, the X part is the remaining difficult part (especially now with all those xfree issues, x.org needs testing... broken genkernel, ...), pushing back a kde/gnome cd a bit further.
Glad to hear it's going to return, hopefully with an x86 (and other architectural) release as well. We frequently hear users saying they use Knoppix to install Gentoo just because it has a graphical UI to read the installation instructions or surf the web. A Gentoo KDE/GNOME LiveCD would definitely get those users back (well, not as if they're missing, but you get the point :)
I believe the cd that was accidently deleted was the x86 kde/gnome experimental livecd. At the time of its creation, upper management had no interest in it, so i let the project die off. It was pretty nice, qt gentoo menu on bootup asking to start kde , gnome or fluxbox.
