vmware complains about xfree86-dga not being enabled on my X server. So I've added the use flag 'dga' to USE in make.conf and re-emerged xfree. To no avail, DGA is still not present? How can I drag DGA, kicking and screaming --regardless -- into the game?

It's compiled in. You need to fix XF86Config to not disable it.
