At least the hardened version of the current (20130124) stage3 comes without udev-mount in sysinit. If you follow the install guide you will end up with a system that does not have udev-mount in sysinit and therefore won't mount /dev/shm and /dev/pts which causes all kinds of problems. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Boot from install-amd64-minimal-20130110.iso 2. Follow the handbook/quick install guide using stage3-hardened-20130124.tar.bz2 3. Reboot your system Actual Results: Errors about not being able to mount /dev/shm and /dev/pts. Expected Results: The fresh system booting up fine.
This was caused by an issue with udev-init-scripts not having build on IUSE[1]. Due to a few issues with relying on USE="build", a different solution is going to be tested[2]. The broken stages were dropped from the mirrors.
