I used genkernel to make my kernel and set up grub to grab it and grub dies on initrd command saying that the image that genkernel generated is too big. See the URL for related discussion

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. genkernel all
2. grub root, setup, kernel, initrd to the result


Actual Results:  
Error 28: item too big

Expected Results:  
Should load the initrd

LILO also complains that the initrd is too big

Okay, we need some / a lot of information. The following would help:

  * Tested LILO and GRUB versions.
  * Kernel .config [ please attach it rather than pasting it in ].
  * Kernel versions.
  * Genkernel version.
  * GRUB/LILO configurations.
  * Hardware specifications.

Solved this problem by upgrading to Grub version 0.94
