Description Christo 2004-03-22 11:33:48 UTC
Hi,

Eclipse is an open platform for tool integration built by an open community of tool providers. It's an integrated development environment.

I made an ebuilds for version 2.1.3 of eclipse-platform-bin. Just updated the version and tested it. Seemed to fix a couple of the other bugs in eclipse that are mentioned here.

I tested it on Blackdown 1.4.1, depends on GTK2. Someone should test it on IBM JDK.

It should probably be specified that this is the gtk version, since there is a motif binary aswell.

Chris

I'd like to test your ebuild but was wondering how is will effect the eclipse-cdt-bin and eclipse-jdt-bin that I already have installed from portage. Have these been upgraded by the eclipse people? Will these work with your new eclipse-platform-bin ebuild?
Comment 3 Christo 2004-03-26 08:55:31 UTC
Yes they should, that's the way I tested it. Updated platform-bin then updated them... I'll update the cdt and jdt ebuilds, I have new ones but they're not submitted because I wasn't sure on the way the directory thing works for eclipse-sdk vs eclipse-platform.

Since emerging cdt with the sdk will not work and emerging cdt with the platform will. (bug 18601) That's apparently the way it's meant to be. *shrug*

Great, I'll wait for the updated cdt-bin and jdt-bin before trying your platform-bin update. Will you post those here or in another bug report? Thanks!

Thanks for the submission.

Our current efforts are at getting dev-util/eclipse-sdk stable. That is a from-source ebuild. Once we get that working, we may start looking into splitting into platform and jdt.

The reason we do not like the -bin packages, are that we currently do som gentoo-specific patching, and will need to do a lot more in order for eclipse to behave more friendly towards Portage with its update manager.

I'm therefore not committing your submissions into the tree just yet. If you can show me concrete examples where the -bin packages work, and our from-source ebuild does not, I'd like to know about it.

If any of you have the time to test dev-util/eclipse-sdk-2.1.3-r2, and see if there are things missing from it that work in the platform-bin, I'd be very grateful.

Afaict, there are no outstanding issues with the from-source ebuilds, and they provide the platform-bin, so I'm closing this as WONTFIX.

Again, I stress that if you find any reason whatsoever for including the platform-bin in Gentoo, reopen this bug with the explanation.

The only thing I want to say on this for now is that eclipse takes a little bit of time to build, but not more than most big C programs/libraries, so I won't include the platform-bin on account of build time.

In any event, I really appreciate your submission, we can't make this distro without you guys:)
