Currently, ebuild for bootsplash informs user that if he wants better quality of boot splash images, he should download then manually. I did it and the difference is really visible. I also looked at Bug 42906, which says that integration of high quality images into main tarball is not desirable becasue of size. What I think would be a good compromise is to introduce a bootsplash USE flag (disabled by default), which, when specified would result in automatic download, extraction and configuration of high quality tarball. Great advantage of this is that once the USE flag is specified, no further manual work is necessary to get higher quality of images (it is alway sgood to have things automatized as much as possible) and it would also automatically keep high quality images up-to-date in case there are any changes. Is this possible? Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. 2. 3.
Sure it is - if the users want it. Frankly speaking, the thought of adding a USE flag crossed my mind before, but I decided to wait and see if anyone is using the new theme. Since there are now at least 2 people who think that gentoo-highquality really makes a difference, I see no reason not to add such a flag. It will be included in the next Bootsplash release, which you can expect no later than in two weeks (it'll most likely be much sooner though).
Thanks, I am looking forward to updated version of bootsplash.
Well, after all I chose a different solution. gentoo-highquality is now part of the standard bootsplash package (starting with bootsplash-themes-0.6.1). All you have to do is set your BOOTSPLASH_THEME to 'gentoo-highquality'. No more manual downloads necessary :)
