After suggestion on bug 452942 to use a single make job, I tried it for thunderbird as well and it works.
But same question, shouldn't the ebuild doing that check?

Running with an unspecified amount of jobs is dangerous. Properly setup --jobs to support your cpu * 2 + 1 and you will not hit such an issue.

I use load based control and it works pretty well for me. But will try your suggestion. Thanks.
