If GNU readline is used, it would be nice to add --use-history-file to the
configure flags to get a gnuplot with a persitent history file.

Whoops, didn't make it into portage yet - I luckily forgot to commit the change since this one is maintained by g2boojum - re-assigning and re-opening this bug.

Added to CVS (w/ some minor changes--absence of a USE flag means the option
should be disabled).
