Description Michael Dill 2002-07-04 02:29:31 UTC
cups-1.1.15 still broken with non-postscript printers.

I have ghostscript-7.05-r2 installed. I am using an HP DeskJet 890c printer.
Cups DOES print now with this printer - but the page formatting is all wrong.
Everything shifted to the left side of the page - not centered as it should be.
Also, things are tilted a bit - the top-leftside marge being slightly greater
that the top-rightside margin. With cups-1.1.14-r4 installed everything prints
correctly. I have heard from others with this same problem. I beleve hynek
said he had the same issues. This needs to be fixed as cups-1.1.15 is being
set as a dependency for other apps - ghostscript for one - which makes updating
a real pain.

I am having similar problems with my HP laserJets, only the first line (of
pixels, not characters) prints, the rest of the page is blank. My logs point
towards an error in the filters pstoraster or ratertoprinter.

Cups 1.1.14-r4 with ghostscript 7.05 printed fine. Despite masking and
downgrading I've been unable to get things working again.

Looks like the problem is in the gimp-print-cups package. After unmerging
everything and rebuilding using the CUPS HP LaserJet driver everything is working.

I, too, have had this problem. I'm using a Lexmark Z53 with the gimp-print
drivers, and the logs continually tell me that rastertoprinter sig 11'd:

I [07/Jul/2002:20:40:44 -0400] Job 4 queued on 'Lexmark' by ''.
I [07/Jul/2002:20:40:44 -0400] Started filter /usr/lib/cups/filter/pstops (PID
4857) for job 4.
I [07/Jul/2002:20:40:44 -0400] Started filter /usr/lib/cups/filter/pstoraster
(PID 4858) for job 4.
I [07/Jul/2002:20:40:44 -0400] Started filter
/usr/lib/cups/filter/rastertoprinter (PID 4859) for job 4.
I [07/Jul/2002:20:40:44 -0400] Started backend /usr/lib/cups/backend/parallel
(PID 4860) for job 4.
E [07/Jul/2002:20:40:45 -0400] PID 4859 crashed on signal 11!

I hope this is fixed soon, because it won't be long before I have to go back to
school and it'd be nice to be able to print papers from my own box.

I saw something similar with a canon BJC-6000, but I thought I just messed
something up in the config.
Comment 5 Matt Behrens 2002-07-18 06:53:02 UTC
Confirming that I am unable to use 1.1.15 -- the "cannot convert" bug cropping
up again. I emerged 1.1.14-r4 over top of 1.1.15, etc-update'd, and all is well
again. Using the HP LaserJet driver.

ghostscript-7.05.5 has been released into portage. (Currently masked) Please
test this ghostscript build with the latest cups build and report on this bug
with your experience.

Closing for now. Thanks, raker!

Hm.. don't know if this is related, but at school, i try to print from the network printer HP Laserjet 4100, and it finds it perfectly after a scan in kdeprint, i select the driver, everything seems perfect, no errors, but when i actually click the 'print' button, nothing happens.. Could this be because of this cups version? Thanks!

Bart, did you try the masked version of ghostscript?
