Description Juergen Rose 2013-01-12 17:51:41 UTC
After switching to activity mode (pressing MS-Windows key) the gnome shell hangs, i.e. I don't have a mouse pointer and key strokes are not recognized. I.e., I can't switch with CTL-ALT-F1 to alphanumeric console but I can log in via ssh.

I see that there is one gnome-shell process:

root@impala:/root(9)# ps uwax | grep gnome-shell | grep -v grep
rose 28255 3.5 4.4 2261172 364760 ? SLl Jan06 322:03 /usr/bin/gnome-shell
rose 28320 0.0 0.0 473584 2320 ? Sl Jan06 0:01 /usr/libexec/gnome-shell-calendar-server

I try to kill this process:
root@impala:/root(10)# kill 28255
root@impala:/root(11)# psgrep gnome-shell
USER PID %CPU %MEM VSZ RSS TTY STAT START TIME COMMAND
rose 28255 3.5 4.4 2261172 364760 ? SLl Jan06 322:03 /usr/bin/gnome-shell
rose 28320 0.0 0.0 473584 2320 ? Sl Jan06 0:01 /usr/libexec/gnome-shell-calendar-server
root@impala:/root(11)# ps uwax | grep gnome-shell | grep -v grep
USER PID %CPU %MEM VSZ RSS TTY STAT START TIME COMMAND
rose 28255 3.5 4.4 2261172 364760 ? SLl Jan06 322:03 /usr/bin/gnome-shell
rose 28320 0.0 0.0 473584 2320 ? Sl Jan06 0:01 /usr/libexec/gnome-shell-calendar-server

Ok, I try to kill gnome-shell with SIGKILL:
root@impala:/root(12)# kill -9 28255

root@impala:/root(14)# ps -ef | grep gnome-shell
rose 1273 28063 0 18:29 ? 00:00:00 /usr/bin/gnome-shell
root 1622 17360 0 18:32 pts/18 00:00:00 grep --colour=auto gnome-shell
rose 28320 1 0 Jan06 ? 00:00:01 /usr/libexec/gnome-shell-calendar-server

OK, the process is killed and restarted. But nothing has changed graphical console. Key strokes are not accepted and I miss the mouse pointer. Can I do anything beside killing the whole gnome-session or gdm?

Reproducible: Always

At the end of ~/.cache/gdm/session.log I find:
