Description Mike Gilbert gentoo-dev 2013-01-10 22:44:10 UTC
The common wisdom these days is that /usr should be a directory on the root filesystem. I think it would be wise to update the LVM2 guide to reflect this.

I'd say its more of a controversy than wisdom; the common knowledge however suggests that, /if/ you use /usr on a separate partition, /then/ you will most likely need an initramfs, which is imo less controversial.

Yes, that is a more accurate description.

I opened this bug because Chainsaw is pointing at this guide as official documentation encouraging the use of a separate /usr volume. He doesn't seem to care for the initramfs solution to booting in this configuration.
Comment 3 Sven Vermeulen (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2013-01-20 16:18:15 UTC
The guide already informs users to use an initramfs if they have /usr and/or /var on an lvm-managed file system. I'll do a small optimization on kernel configuration in the guide (as it refers to 2.4 kernels as well, which can be dropped) but I think that should suffice.
Comment 4 Sven Vermeulen (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2013-01-20 16:22:19 UTC
There ya go. Also referred to the initramfs requirement where feasible.
