* Building of docs with python3 currently **FAILS**
* Docs can be built effectively with python2.
* eselect python2 and recommence emerge

Line 1 says it all. For now I am going to revert to my original line 3 which was 'more' comprehensive in supplying the better required action.

Please re-emerge by use of "USE_PYTHON=2.7 USE=doc emerge matplotlib".

Again, by virtue of upstream's decision to exclude py3 capability to build the docs, this one anomoly exists. The currently inherited distutils takes 1 py2 and 1 py3 unconditionally and builds with them for any emerge, by default. Consequently, the specially prepared the message above explaining such, accompanied by die, which would inevitable occur later. Currently, short of inheriting python and restricting to one python impl, there's no alternative.
The emerge form above by explicit selection of 2.7 is the only assured way to exclude py3.
There are more promising alternatives on use of the distutils-r1, which will likely occur 'soon'. Until then, enough said

INVALID my ass.

Is Python 2 enabled? Yes. Just select it, build the doc, and select the other one back -- I'm pretty sure that this has done before. This stupid message just means that you don't know what you're doing.

I spoke too soon, but seems I'm not on my own. The notion of hardcoding to py2 internally occurred to me after clicking save changes. The setting of the message on review is certainly second in line to internally selecting py2 for building the docs, ridding invoking die, though it didn't occur to me at the time of that initial attempt. It isn't and wasn't wrong and was ackd and accepted by some. Whether it's invalid or not to me is inconsequential. That it lead to a better solution is the salient point here, despite the path becoming tainted by a defensive stance of brash indignation.

"select the other one back" no idea what that means.

"I'm pretty sure that this has done before."
yes, by me, at least once.

"This stupid message" a subjectively laiden, derogatory value judgement if ever I saw 1,
"just means that you don't know what you're doing",

well, here we have more of the same.  Whatever;

Let's put it clear: the Python team has been already ridden by somebody who closed bugs because they didn't apply to him, and cared not about fixing this properly. His current status is "banished from the CVS".

Since with this one, in less than a week, you dissed a bug report because you hadn't had the skill for, or couldn't care to, identify the bug, I'm pretty much wondering _how_ you passed through recruitment.

I hope the remaining members of the team (who on the other bug probably took, to fix it, less time than for you to mark it as unconfirmed) can see that things don't go south again.
Comment 5 Dirkjan Ochtman (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2013-01-06 19:44:20 UTC
Diego, I think we have a fairly good team of people watching the python alias at the moment. This bug got fixed, at least, right, by Ian? He may have had some initial confusion about what was wrong or how to fix it, but it seems fine now.
