USE=gpm only makes sense when you're using a mouse in a virtual terminal (e.g. a console system w/out X). once you have X, gpm is pointless. i'd wager that very few people use gpm anymore and X is the dominate interface which means having USE=gpm be on by default is dead weight. it might make sense to keep enabled for minimal CDs (assuming we also launch the gpm init.d by default) as those don't have X running.
+1 I've had USE=-gpm in my make.defaults for ages.
Always one of the first things I disable.
dwfreed checked the CONTENTS files of the mini-install and livedvds and gpm is /not/ started at boot, so it's safe to turn off. I'll do it in a few days if no one beats me to it.
Just built stage1-2-3 on amd64 with this change. No problems found.
Committed.
(In reply to Matt Turner from comment #3) > I'll do it in a few days if no one beats me to it. Nice style announcement. Happy hacking.(In reply to SpanKY from comment #0) > USE=gpm only makes sense when you're using a mouse in a virtual terminal > (e.g. a console system w/out X). once you have X, gpm is pointless. Wrong, chvt and it's usefull again. > i'd wager that very few people use gpm anymore and X is the dominate > interface which means having USE=gpm be on by default is dead weight. Still wrong.
(In reply to Michael Weber from comment #6) chill out. one person using gpm still doesn't make it common let alone the majority. unless you can show that >=50% of people use gpm (hell, even know what it is), then you'll have a case for it being re-added. announcing it on gentoo-dev-announce would be nice (if it hasn't been already).
(In reply to SpanKY from comment #7) > announcing it on gentoo-dev-announce would be nice (if it hasn't been > already). Based on my quick search through my gentoo-dev and gentoo-dev-announce folders, it has not, so could one of you write something up and post it?
