I have installed www-client/firefox-10.0.11 from source. But instead of installing Firfox-10.0.11 it installed Aurora-10.0.11. On doing a web search for the same error i bumed on a old google group https://groups.google.com/forum/?fromgroups=#!topic/linux.gentoo.user/XQ55HKpLRXw suggesting to emerge-webrsync and reinstall. I tried 1. emerge-webrsync -> emerge -c firefox -> emerge firefox 2. emerge --sync -> emerge -c firefox -> emerge firefox 3. emerge -c firefox -> rm -i /etc/portage/disclean/firefox* -> emerge --sync -> emerge firefox But on all three time end result was same. I also couldn't found anything useful on googling the same error. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. emerge --sync 2. emerge firefox 3. firefox & 4. <Alt>+H 5. go to "about:home" Actual Results: after completing step 4. Shows "About Aurora" after completing step 5. Shows Aurora logo Expected Results: after completing step 4. Shows "About Firefox" after completing step 5. You have set the USE flag > bindist: Disable official Firefox branding (icons, name) which are not binary-redistributable according to upstream. which is supposed to get rid of the Firefox branding; so, you need to toggle this USE flag for the package to obtain the expected results.
Thanks a lot. I've tried it and it does solve the problem. Although I was aware of branding issues of firefox since I am coming from debian back ground, but didn't thought of it to be responsible for the issue as many other distro do use this official branding only. Any how thanks again, a good learning experience for me on the very first day with gentoo.
Indeed, for binary packages like firefox-bin you willl also get the Firefox branding since you retain the upstream binaries, just like the other distros; the purpose of the bindist USE flag on the other hand, is to allow the self compiled binary to be redistributed to others without the Firefox branding. As those have the Aurora branding instead, they ensure that Firefox branded user patched builds aren't floating around the web, as that last thing would not be legal.
Thanks for the explaination. This example also shows a classic difference between FreeBSD and Gentoo. I've used FreeBSD for about a year and installed FF from ports on it, but that do provide FF branding. The logical explanation to that would be one of the following they do not expect their users to distribute prepared binaries with user patch (which I am sure users do, thats why they have option to just genrate packages or pbi from ports) or they are not at all patching it. This also is not seams to be feasable for FreeBSD system. Then we are left with only one option they are some how either managing a loop hole to skip to the branding or not caring for it at all. Either way I am already liking the Gentoo way of using things. Also Making "bindist" option default gives me a unknown power of making a totally free system, which I can redistribute to others. At least I am redistributing it to myself, as I have two identical systems and compiling source on only one at a time. If, I may allowed, can we put this info about usage of "bindist" USE Flag and that it is used by default in desktop (gnome) profile in Gentoo Handbook and Installation guide or on Gentoo wiki also. Thanks.
