Looking at the URL for this bug, you can see that stable version 0.8.0 of Gstreamer and friends has been released.

yeah we know about releases.. patience please. Anyway this is part of the gnome 2.6 desktop and won't be in the tree until that is released

Just a little question. Why does it depend on gnome 2.6, GStreamer isn't really a part of gnome, or is it?

Q: Does GStreamer depend on GNOME ?

A: No. But many of the applications developed for GStreamer do, including our sample applications. There is nothing hindering people from developing applications using other toolkits however and we would happily help promote such efforts. A good example of an application using GStreamer, but which is not using GNOME is the Mozstreamer which uses Mozilla XUL.

don't think it really depends on gnome.. gnome depends on gstreamer for parts of it's functionality.
Comment 5 Jeffrey Yasskin 2004-03-21 10:41:52 UTC
GStreamer 0.8 is part of Gnome 2.6, but it's stable _now_, unlike the rest of the gnome apps. I think it should at least be masked in portage for people who want to run totem or rhythmbox HEAD.

If the necessary changes in the eclass would break gst 0.6, then that sounds like a good reason not to put 0.8 in portage, but also a bug in the eclass.

Is the new ebuild/eclass written and just not in portage, or do you need someone else to write it?

Oh and another one who demands this and that for some greater purpose. We'll get to it when we have time, can we please have some patience here. I quote the gstreamer page : <oh crap they removed it> . Anyway it came down to it that we will add it within a reasonable timeframe. Yes that includes the word 'timeframe', that doesn't mean the second it comes out. I'm getting a little freaked out about people who demand everything the day or week it is released.

In short : we _are_ working on it, for your pleasure.

Oh and that this is important for people who run rb or totem HEAD, what do we care ? Not 1 gstreamer 0.8 using application is in the tree at this time, so why should we care.

This has little todo with the eclass btw.

So.. *sigh*.. goes back hacking after a few minutes of venting agression...

Foser, you are overreacting slightly.

Twice in this bug you have asked people to have patience; however, nowhere in this bug has anyone expressed a lack of patience. When I created this bug, I did not expect it to be added "the day or week it [was] released," nor did my wording in the description or summary suggest that I expected an ebuild "the second it [came] out" or that I was being impatient.

Oh, while I'm at it, my apologies to the Sound team for not checking the metadata prior to filing this bug.

To be honest, I do not particularly care what version of gstreamer is in portage. I was simply playing around with Rhythmbox and noticed that a new version of gstreamer was available than was in portage. I searched bugzilla and filed this bug after failing to find an existing bump for version 0.8.0. My intention was simply to inform the Gentoo developers of the stable release.

Mr. Yasskin, on the other hand, *does* seem to care about what version of gstreamer is available in portage. Even he, however, does not express impatience and certainly does not demand _anything_. It seems to me that he is simply expressing his opinion (which you are obviously entitled to ignore).

Also, in my unimportant opinion, something a little less hostile than "what do we care" might be warranted.

Dispite my criticisms of your choice of wording, I do wholeheartedly appreciate your time consuming voluntary efforts to better Gentoo Linux. Hats off to you, because it definately sounds like you're putting in a lot of time!
