kdepim fails - something to do with docbook, but since I have no experience with that I can't say much more.

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
emerge kdepim

Actual Results:  
Failed compile 

Expected Results:  
Succesful compile

I get the same thing with kdesdk as well - might previous kde updates have botched docbook somehow?

Ok, etcat says it belongs to kdelibs, remerging that.

OK, remerging kdelibs fixed it. I wonder why it went wrong in the first place though.
