I can't speak for other cases but at least on my hardware this patch is completely okay. X crashes without this patch on an regularly basis. So I have to apply this patch on kernel 3.7. A8-3550M with Radeon HD 6620G

3.7.3 is in Portage; versions 3.7.0 - 3.7.2 are not likely to be stabilized and not much people are experiencing this so I assume it is fine for the few that experience this to upgrade.
