I use a VIA8237 based chipset motherboard (MSI K8T Neo). I had 2.6.3-gentoo-r1 working just fine using the K8 processor option. I copied the .config file to the new kernel dir and made oldconfig. I chose Opteron/Athlon64 as the processor choice. I compiled the new kernel and installed it. Upon reboot, the new kernel panics with several messages about missed interrupts, maybe more since it scrolled too many error messages to fit in one screen. I tried removing some features in the kernel but it did not help. As a last resort I switched the processor to the Generic x86-64 and it worked perfectly. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1.Configure the kernel to use the Opteron/Athlon64 2.compile and install the kernel on /boot 3.reboot - the kernel panics Portage 2.0.50-r1 (default-amd64-2004.0, gcc-3.3.3, glibc-2.3.3_pre20040207-r0, 2.6.4-gentoo) ================================================================= System uname: 2.6.4-gentoo x86_64 4 Gentoo Base System version 1.4.3.13p1 Autoconf: sys-devel/autoconf-2.59-r3 Automake: sys-devel/automake-1.8.2 ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="amd64 ~amd64" AUTOCLEAN="yes" CFLAGS="-O2" CHOST="x86_64-pc-linux-gnu" COMPILER="gcc3" CONFIG_PROTECT="/etc /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xkb /usr/kde/2/share/config /usr/kde/3.1/share/config /usr/kde/3.2/share/config /usr/kde/3/share/config /usr/lib/mozilla/defaults/pref /usr/share/config /var/qmail/control" CONFIG_PROTECT_MASK="/etc/gconf /etc/terminfo /etc/env.d" CXXFLAGS="-O2" DISTDIR="/usr/portage/distfiles" FEATURES="autoaddcvs ccache sandbox" GENTOO_MIRRORS="http://mirrors.tds.net/gentoo http://128.213.5.34/gentoo/ http://gentoo.chem.wisc.edu/gentoo/ http://gentoo.seren.com/gentoo http://gentoo.mirrors.pair.com/ http://gentoo.binarycompass.org http://gentoo.ccccom.com http://gentoo.oregonstate.edu http://open-systems.ufl.edu/mirrors/gentoo http://cudlug.cudenver.edu/gentoo/ http://gentoo.netnitco.net http://mirror.cpsc.ucalgary.ca/mirror/gentoo.org http://lug.mtu.edu/gentoo/ http://darkstar.ist.utl.pt/gentoo/" MAKEOPTS="-j2" PKGDIR="/usr/portage/packages" PORTAGE_TMPDIR="/var/tmp" PORTDIR="/usr/portage" PORTDIR_OVERLAY="" SYNC="rsync://rsync.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage" USE="X amd64 apm arts avi berkdb cdr crypt cups encode esd foomaticdb gdbm gif gnome gpm gtk gtk2 imlib jpeg kde libg++ libwww mikmod motif mozilla mpeg multilib ncurses nls oggvorbis opengl oss pam pdflib perl png python qt quicktime readline sdl slang spell ssl tcpd truetype xml2 xmms xv zlib" ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Relevant sections of a working .config: CONFIG_X86_64=y CONFIG_64BIT=y CONFIG_X86=y CONFIG_MMU=y CONFIG_RWSEM_GENERIC_SPINLOCK=y CONFIG_X86_CMPXCHG=y CONFIG_EARLY_PRINTK=y CONFIG_HPET_TIMER=y CONFIG_HPET_EMULATE_RTC=y CONFIG_GENERIC_ISA_DMA=y # # Code maturity level options # CONFIG_EXPERIMENTAL=y CONFIG_CLEAN_COMPILE=y CONFIG_STANDALONE=y CONFIG_BROKEN_ON_SMP=y # # General setup # CONFIG_SWAP=y CONFIG_SYSVIPC=y # CONFIG_BSD_PROCESS_ACCT is not set CONFIG_SYSCTL=y CONFIG_LOG_BUF_SHIFT=14 CONFIG_HOTPLUG=y # CONFIG_IKCONFIG is not set # CONFIG_EMBEDDED is not set CONFIG_KALLSYMS=y CONFIG_FUTEX=y CONFIG_EPOLL=y CONFIG_IOSCHED_NOOP=y CONFIG_IOSCHED_AS=y CONFIG_IOSCHED_DEADLINE=y CONFIG_IOSCHED_CFQ=y # CONFIG_CC_OPTIMIZE_FOR_SIZE is not set # # Loadable module support # CONFIG_MODULES=y CONFIG_MODULE_UNLOAD=y CONFIG_MODULE_FORCE_UNLOAD=y CONFIG_OBSOLETE_MODPARM=y # CONFIG_MODVERSIONS is not set CONFIG_KMOD=y # # Processor type and features # # CONFIG_MK8 is not set # CONFIG_MPSC is not set CONFIG_GENERIC_CPU=y CONFIG_X86_L1_CACHE_BYTES=128 CONFIG_X86_L1_CACHE_SHIFT=7 CONFIG_X86_TSC=y CONFIG_X86_GOOD_APIC=y # CONFIG_MICROCODE is not set # CONFIG_X86_MSR is not set # CONFIG_X86_CPUID is not set CONFIG_X86_IO_APIC=y CONFIG_X86_LOCAL_APIC=y CONFIG_MTRR=y # CONFIG_SMP is not set CONFIG_PREEMPT=y CONFIG_GART_IOMMU=y # CONFIG_SWIOTLB is not set CONFIG_X86_MCE=y --------------------------------------------------------------- Relevant sections of the .config that does not work: CONFIG_X86_64=y CONFIG_64BIT=y CONFIG_X86=y CONFIG_MMU=y CONFIG_RWSEM_GENERIC_SPINLOCK=y CONFIG_X86_CMPXCHG=y CONFIG_EARLY_PRINTK=y CONFIG_HPET_TIMER=y CONFIG_HPET_EMULATE_RTC=y CONFIG_GENERIC_ISA_DMA=y # # Code maturity level options # CONFIG_EXPERIMENTAL=y CONFIG_CLEAN_COMPILE=y CONFIG_STANDALONE=y CONFIG_BROKEN_ON_SMP=y # # General setup # CONFIG_SWAP=y CONFIG_SYSVIPC=y # CONFIG_BSD_PROCESS_ACCT is not set CONFIG_SYSCTL=y CONFIG_LOG_BUF_SHIFT=14 CONFIG_HOTPLUG=y # CONFIG_IKCONFIG is not set # CONFIG_EMBEDDED is not set CONFIG_KALLSYMS=y CONFIG_FUTEX=y CONFIG_EPOLL=y CONFIG_IOSCHED_NOOP=y CONFIG_IOSCHED_AS=y CONFIG_IOSCHED_DEADLINE=y CONFIG_IOSCHED_CFQ=y # CONFIG_CC_OPTIMIZE_FOR_SIZE is not set # # Loadable module support # CONFIG_MODULES=y CONFIG_MODULE_UNLOAD=y CONFIG_MODULE_FORCE_UNLOAD=y CONFIG_OBSOLETE_MODPARM=y # CONFIG_MODVERSIONS is not set CONFIG_KMOD=y # # Processor type and features # CONFIG_MK8=y # CONFIG_MPSC is not set # CONFIG_GENERIC_CPU is not set CONFIG_X86_L1_CACHE_BYTES=64 CONFIG_X86_L1_CACHE_SHIFT=6 CONFIG_X86_TSC=y CONFIG_X86_GOOD_APIC=y # CONFIG_MICROCODE is not set # CONFIG_X86_MSR is not set # CONFIG_X86_CPUID is not set CONFIG_X86_IO_APIC=y CONFIG_X86_LOCAL_APIC=y CONFIG_MTRR=y # CONFIG_SMP is not set CONFIG_PREEMPT=y CONFIG_GART_IOMMU=y # CONFIG_SWIOTLB is not set CONFIG_X86_MCE=y
Yikes! Now the linux32 command seems to be segfaulting! It was working perfectly on the 2.6.3-gentoo kernel. Back to it for now then. Tried: linux32 chroot target, where target is a 32 bit image that I use to run the environment of an embedded system. The embedded system uses an Elan sc520 processor, and I have a bug on that architecture as well: #44769.
disable pre-empt. pre-empt on amd64 is /not/ something i would recommend at this point in time, and possibly not in the future either.
Hello Travis, yes, you were right. I disabled the preempt option and now the kernel boots just fine with the Opteron/Athlon64 processor option. Thanks, Marius
marking as wontfix, since pre-empt is a known source of problems on amd64 and disabling it fixes the issue.
