I don't consider support for pypy-1.8 a major bug. It's also not a regression since you can cause the same error with the current stable version.

The main thing about that bug is that it is install/ebuild related, not the actual installed running code that is the issue.  It gets tripped up by the .pyc files created by Cpython as part of running setup.py.

pypy support is something new and under development, but should not hold up stabilizing this for the vast majority of users.  I can't even install pypy from source on my system, same as (I'm guessing) probably most of gentoo's user base.
