On a system, I had installed gcc 4.4.7, 4.5.4, and 4.7.2. The active version of gcc was 4.5.4 according to gcc-config. Issue is in toolchain.eclass in should_we_gcc_config, since it will output the full "your gcc config appears valid, here's how to switch to (version we're emerging)" message regardless of whether it's a merge or an unmerge.
