Description Felix Jodoin 2004-03-13 16:22:30 UTC
Hi, as soon as I installed gnome (from packages cd, x86, 2004.0 with kernel 2.4.24 and XFree86 4.3.0) and ran startx, It went into a black screen where it flickered, and then just quit. The only thing I got was:
SESSION_MANAGER=local/gentletux:/tmp/ICE-unix/[Numbers and such]

Waiting for X server to shut down....
If I load up TWM and run gnome-session in an xterm, it says "Illegal Instruction", and quits. Running gnome-terminal works, and gnome-panel launches (doesn't finish loading) and gives the same error.
Yes, I have tried failsafe, and yes, there are leftover folders in ICE-unix, such as gconf-felixj and orbit-felixj.

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Run startx (with xinitrc to say "exec gnome-session".
2.
3.
Actual Results:
It just quit.

Expected Results:
It should have worked.

!not on my box, so not from emerge info!

illegal instruction suggests you are using packages optimized for another architecture than yours. What machine are you using and what packages ?

reassign please wranglers, sounds more like a packaging issue..
Comment 2 Felix Jodoin 2004-03-14 08:06:39 UTC
Yes, I am using the x86 binaries on an i686... I removed them, but now even after removing the distfiles ( I am testing this on pkg-config) whenever it compiles something NEW, it says Illegal Instruction when I run the new program.

I strongly suggest using the i686-packages cd then.
Comment 6 Yi Quang (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-04-07 16:29:29 UTC
Can the reporter please state whether or not this is still a problem?
Comment 7 Felix Jodoin 2004-04-07 18:59:42 UTC
Yes, It's still a problem, even with the i686 discs.
