Description Paul McDermott 2012-12-03 18:30:24 UTC
sci-libs/shapelib tries to install /usr/bin/dbfdump, but perl-gcpan/DBD-XBase also have a command of the same name (& purpose).

I'm filing a bug (despite portageq reporting only one other competing application because for someone working with Shapefiles in perl it is likely they have installed DBD:XBase to support Geo::Shapefile and Geo::Shapefile::Writer, and they may easily be using applications which require shapelib.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1.g-cpan -i BDB::XBase
2.emerge -av sci-libs/shapelib
3.
Actual Results:
 * This package will overwrite one or more files that may belong to other
 * packages (see list below). You can use a command such as `portageq
 * owners / <filename>` to identify the installed package that owns a
 * file. If portageq reports that only one package owns a file then do
 * NOT file a bug report. A bug report is only useful if it identifies at
 * least two or more packages that are known to install the same file(s).
 * If a collision occurs and you can not explain where the file came from
 * then you should simply ignore the collision since there is not enough
 * information to determine if a real problem exists. Please do NOT file
 * a bug report at http://bugs.gentoo.org unless you report exactly which
 * two packages install the same file(s). Once again, please do NOT file
 * a bug report unless you have completely understood the above message.
 *
 * Detected file collision(s):
 *
 * 	/usr/bin/dbfdump
 *
 * Searching all installed packages for file collisions...
 *
 * Press Ctrl-C to Stop
 *
 * perl-gcpan/DBD-XBase-1.03:0::x-portage
 * 	/usr/bin/dbfdump
 *
 * Package 'sci-libs/shapelib-1.3.0-r1' NOT merged due to file
 * collisions. If necessary, refer to your elog messages for the whole
 * content of the above message.

Expected Results:
Both sci-libs/shapelib and perl-gcpan/DBD-XBase can live side-by-side.

sci-libs/shapelib is required by sci-geosciences/gpsbabel which is requried by sci-geosciences/qgis. qgis has a 'gps' use flag, but having this use flag unset does not stop gpsbabel being installed. Better use of the QGIS 'gps' use flag may be one way to mitigate the problem.

I don't think we even can fix this for g-cpan installation.
