Hotplug is a pita to configure. On my debian box, I have installed murasaki to replace hotplug. IMHO, murasaki is much easier to use. I think there should be a murasaki ebuild in the gentoo portage system, as this would make life using usb or other hotpluggable devices much easier. I have been using murasaki for quite a while without problems, whereas linux-hotplug seems to be quite prone to bugs and problems. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Deinstall hotplug 2. Install murasaki 3. Have a good life with usb working ;-)
1) The URL is bad (contains http://http://...) 2) Does it work with udev?
1.) Fixed, thx for the the hint. 2.) Hmmm, I cannot really tell. However, the author claims that it runs with Linux 2.6, no matter if sysfs is running or not. I assume that it is able to cope with udev, but I still use 2.4... 3.) I have installed murasaki on my Gentoo box today, I have modified the upstream rc script accordingly. Apart from some quirks (trying to load modules mousedev and printer despite being compiled into the kernel), it works, without much config editing neccessary. I only deactivated the agents I don't need (pci, net, firewire etc.). Works fine for me so far.
gregkh is our hotplug dude
And I don't want to maintain this package. What makes it different from the current hotplug package that we (and every other distro) use?
