Description Thomas Kahle (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2012-11-30 02:29:19 UTC
Please see the attached build.log. Curiously it says:

BUILDING MATPLOTLIB
            matplotlib: 1.2.0
                python: 3.2.3 (default, May 15 2012, 14:02:22) [GCC 4.5.3]
              platform: linux2

REQUIRED DEPENDENCIES
                 numpy: no
                        * You must install numpy 1.4 or later to build
                        * matplotlib.

I have numpy-1.5.1 from sage-on-gentoo overlay, but that should not be too different.

Reproducible: Always

build.log with failures
Comment 2 François Bissey 2012-11-30 02:40:00 UTC
Hi Thomas,

I think that's related to your previous numpy problem that you posted about on the science mailing list. The failure is because python 3.2.3 doesn't find numpy. But if you followed my advice from the mailing list you don't have numpy installed for python 3.2.3!
We have an updated numpy-1.5.1 in the science overlay, someone bothered to provide a fix for the blas/lapack problem and I merged it if you want to it a spin.
Comment 3 François Bissey 2012-11-30 02:41:56 UTC
Sorry I meant the sage-on-gentoo overlay :)

I can't find anything updated about numpy-1.5.1 ??
Anyway, I tried to disable python-3.2.3 and now matplotlib fails differently. I'll attach the build.log in a second.

We have ways and means of disabling python3. Which 1 did you use?

The failure in the attached build log is with Python-2.7.
Comment 8 François Bissey 2012-12-02 09:10:55 UTC
This is different from your original log. That's weird parsing of tcl/tk options. Can you try to build with -tk to see if the problem is limited to that back end.

The numpy-1.5.1 ebuild in the s-o-g overlay has an extra patch but was not revbumped.
Comment 9 François Bissey 2012-12-02 09:37:42 UTC
Actually trolling both logs I can see you did go past that point without trouble in the first one. What changed in between these two builds?
Comment 10 François Bissey 2012-12-02 10:26:23 UTC
numpy 1.5.1 from the s-o-g overlay is guilty of that last failure. This is totally weird.

The history is like you inferred:

first build.log: original numpy (without the patch) (from s-o-g).

Then I rebuilt numpy on Nov 30th and tried again and produced the second build.log and comment #4.
Comment 12 François Bissey 2012-12-02 23:32:02 UTC
I am starting to move things to numpy-1.7.0 (beta2) for now in sage-on-gentoo to try to get ride of all the problems that are appearing from our continued use of numpy 1.5.1. But bug #443778 is currently a blocker for moving things along since we have to rebuild scipy and stuff.
Comment 13 Olivier Huber 2012-12-05 16:58:09 UTC
I was able to reproduce the issue and I found a candidate fix.
I've created a PR on github:cschwan/sage-on-gentoo to add a patch found in upstream's git. Once it is merged, you could try and see if it fixes it. Or you can add my fork as a git branch and try it directly.

On my setup I was able to install matplotlib with the tk flag and with for python-2.7 and python-3.2

I have merged Olivier's changes in the sage-on-gentoo overlay. Can you try it Thomas?

I still get the issue in the currently attached build.log. It happens because

 - l t c l 8 . 5 - l t k 8 . 5

is passed on the command line. Where do the spaces come from?

I've no idea. I couldn't track them, I'm not familiar to the python build system.

This may look strange, but to completely reproduce the steps I did, could you please emerge numpy-1.6.2 (possibly with --nodeps added to emerge) and then emerge numpy-1.5.1 from the sage-on-gentoo overlay. I'm not sure about this but there may be some strange bytecode thing going on here.

Hey guys, I just bought this snake oil that cured all my pains. Seriously, after doing what the above paragraph suggests I can not reproduce any failures. both numpy-1.5.1 and matplotlib-1.2 work with both python-2.7 and python-3.2.

Feel free to close this bug and thanks!

Hey Thomas, you are a dev you should be able to put this ticket to solved fixed, me and Olivier cannot (although that may change soon).
