Description prakash 2012-11-06 10:39:15 UTC
DuckDuckGo is a general purpose search engine with real privacy (we do not collect or share personal information), less spam/clutter and instant answers. We would like to be included as a search option in Firefox.

Additional info:
Please add https://duckduckgo.com/?q={{search}}&t=gentoo so that we can count the number of searches from Gentoo.

Opensearch: https://duckduckgo.com/opensearch_ssl.xml

Thanks!

I don't understand what needs to be patched here. When I go to duckduckgo.com, the search providers menu (on the left side of the quick search text box) has an option that says "Add DuckDuckGo" and I seem to be able to search fine after adding it. I believe this bug belongs to mozilla bugzilla.
Comment 2 prakash 2012-11-06 12:13:52 UTC
Many users would probably not go to DuckDuckGo.com. Hence, we would like Gentoo to include DuckDuckGo as a search option in Firefox so that it is easy to try us out.

Please let me know if you have any questions?

Thanks!

Ooh, spam.
Comment 4 prakash 2012-11-06 15:00:27 UTC
Jeroen, how is this spam?

Even though I'm a recent adopter of DuckDuckGo, I wouldn't see why we would have to add the different options for each type of search engine. Currently it seems it provides the most popular ones for each category, adding more search engines for each category would only clutter that list. If you'd add DDG, you'd have to add the more popular Yahoo and Bing as well; and one day you'll end up adding BotBot...

Going to DuckDuckGo.com and adding the search provider to your browser from there should suffice. Gentoo is meant to be additive, you start from scratch and you build on top of that; it shouldn't come with a huge list of search engines by default, although it might be interesting to contribute using a firefox-search-pack ebuild or something like that. Although as you can guess, not much people would use that as they would barely use any search engines from such pack so they could as well add them manually.

I wouldn't count on upstream's support either, Google's been part of their browser homepage for ages. And it's actually not just that, they do have a deal to be the default search provider; see for instance http://blog.mozilla.org/blog/2011/12/20/mozilla-and-google-sign-new-agreement-for-default-search-in-firefox/ and http://www.forbes.com/sites/scottcleland/2012/01/06/google-firefox-search-deal-is-antitrust-red-meat/

The best you can do is try.

1) This is your only ever bug report on this bug tracker, or comment for that
   matter.
2) You obviously work at duckduckgo.
3) You want us to add your service to one of the packages we distribute,
   obviously promoting your company.
4) Additionally, that same service would probably cost your company money if you
went through the appropriate channel, viz. the Mozilla Foundation.

Now please start contributing to Gentoo Linux or go away.

Tom, thanks for trying us out. That's a fair argument on cluttering the search ballot.

We believe that privacy (we do not collect or share personal information -- https://duckduckgo.com/privacy.html) and better search (https://duckduckgo.com/goodies/) are not mutually exclusive.

Therefore we are available in Debian, Ubuntu, Linux Mint, Opera, Raspberry Pi and 40+ partners (http://help.duckduckgo.com/customer/portal/articles/775109-partnerships). We have a revenue share agreement with most of these partners, and are happy to do the same with Gentoo.

As you have mentioned, it is difficult to count on upstream support, which is why we are working with distros directly. Please let us know your comments/thoughts.

I asked you nicely to stop. If you want to share your revenue with this project, you will want to start negotiating with the Gentoo Foundation[1]. If you have nothing else to contribute to our project, then again, please stop.

Hi from User Relations!

I've re-opened this bug and I have assigned it to the Gentoo Trustees. They must evaluate and approve all items related to finances. Of note is that the branch of Gentoo that handles money is not directly related to the branch of Gentoo that maintains Mozilla / Firefox. Even if the foundation approves this request, the folks maintaining Firefox may turn it down.

I have also CC'd the folks who maintain Mozilla in Gentoo.

This is completely untrue, and I ask that anybody with a question over this take this outside of bugzilla. Gentoo is legally bound by the decisions of the Foundation (legally it IS the Foundation, even if we operate as a community), and the Foundation does not lightly enter into agreements of any kind for exactly this reason. The Foundation would certainly not enter into an agreement without ensuring it would be met.

If anybody has concerns with any agreement that may or may not be reached by all means make the trustees aware of them or bring them into discussion on -nfp. Concerns over sponsorship/placement/etc are nothing new - an appropriate consensus will be reached and applied consistently.

My intention was to convey that the approval of both groups would be required. The Foundation would never agree to take money and force people to patch an package against the maintainers will (this is not like a traditional top-down business.)

Mozilla team will take the stand of push for it upstream, we do not have the man power to continuouesly update a patch just to support some search engine that most have never heard. If upstream decides to support then and only then will mozilla team support in gentoo.
Comment 14 Roy Bamford gentoo-dev 2012-12-16 20:38:39 UTC
The after due deliberation on this instance only, the trustees of the
Gentoo Foundation Inc. have determined that this bug should be treated
like any other enhancement request bug. It is therefore for the package
maintainers to determine how to progress this request.

For the avoidance of doubt, this instance does not set any precedent or
policy within Gentoo.
