I'm not sure if this is a Gentoo problem or a Firefox problem - but it seems to work fine on Debian/FireFox0.8... On Gentoo [even if run as (sudo) root] FireFox will appear to download and install themes (and notify you that you need to restart) - but on restarting the themes will be nowhere to be seen. Similarly, I downloaded about 10 .xpi extensions from the FirFox site, of which two were present when I restarted the browser. Interestingly, when installing either a theme or a plugin, you get a the "you must restart" message once for each theme/plugin that you have installed this session - e.g. by the 10th you're having to click through 10 dialogs. A (possibly related) problem is that the download manager works correctly for the first item, but any further ones perpetually stay stuck on "Starting..." (even on my work network with a 2Mb/s outgoing pipe). Clicking "Cancel" then "Retry" causes these items to then complete immediately, but they seem to be left sitting in /tmp rather than being installed into FireFox. Note that even these stalled downloads still report "plugin/theme installed" even when they're apparently stuck. As I mentioned, I would write this off as a FireFox problem, if it weren't for the fact that the Debian packaged version appears to work correctly. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: After first plugin, try to download further ones. Try to install any theme. Actual Results: Some plugins installed; no themes became available. Some .jar and .xpi files left in /tmp Expected Results: Theme/plugin should be installed into FireFox. Please disregard - I had Mozilla running at the same time on a different machine via ssh, which broke FireFox. The download dialog is still broken, but I guess that this is one for the FireFox developers.
