install-x86-minimal-2004.0.iso hangs when trying to find hdg on Intel 875 motherboard configured in enhanced mode. If the bios is configured for Legacy mode the live-cd boots properly. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1.Set bios the enhanced mode 2.boot 3. Actual Results: Computer hangs and needs to be hard restarted Expected Results: boot
could you post some error messages please?
I have this same problem on an ASUS P4C800 Deluxe Motherboard with: AMIBIOS 08.00.09 Build Date: 02/23/04 ID: P4C81102 The install hangs, last thing I see in details is hde:attached ide-disk driver. It can be fixed by going into the BIOS and changing Onboard IDE Operate Mode from Enhanced Mode to Compatible Mode. The only problem is, in compatible mode, I no longer can boot from the CD drive. I know this is the problem because while trying to install SUSE, it stops in the same place and is fixed by booting from the floppy. I've found that Knoppix also has this problem. But I was hoping this could be fixed, Mandrake and Red Hat don't have this problem, so it can be done.
Did this still occur in 2004.1?
None of the Gentoo kernels seem to have SATA support, at least for the Intel SATA controllers. This is common in 2.4 kernels. If your BIOS allows it, change to "Compatiblity" (instead of "Native") mode and enable both Parallel ATA and Serial ATA. This might mean for some BIOSes that you specifically set to use Parallel and choose "Use SATA" by setting it to "Yes". In this manner you will get all your standard PATA devices and your SATA devices running in PATA emulation mode. The installation (read: disk access) will be a bit slower than if you were running native SATA, but this can be quickly corrected by compiling the gentoo dev kernel (2.6, 2.6.8 I've verified success with) with the appropriate SATA device drivers (the SATA device drivers appear in no less than three locations in the menuconfig for configuring kernel modules). Once you have compiled SATA support into your 2.6 kernel, you can enable "Native" mode for SATA devices in the BIOS when you reboot. This problem may affect more than just the Intel SATA chipsets.
The 2004.3 LiveCD will based on 2.6.8.1 or possibly 2.6.9, so this will no longer be an issue. If after 2004.3 is released (or if you test one of the _test series CDs which I will be releasing shortly) if there is still a problem, then REOPEN this bug.
I have been trying to install Gentoo with the 2004.3 LiveCD, and I can still not get the LiveCDs to work at all. The LiveCDs die when trying to boot as nromal. They start the hotplugging, get to "Starting PCI hotplugging" and then it just sits forever at that point. I have never bothered waiting more than 5 minutes for it to get passed this point. I have booted with 'gentoo nohotplug' and Gentoo LiveCD prompt shows up. However I then have zero hard drives available (both of my HDDs are SATA WD Raptors). I tried to modprobe libata etc, and that just causes the PC to freeze up again. Redhat boots and will install on my PC without a problem. I booted off a Fedora Core 2 CD, and it let me format the drives etc. I did a match of the modules loaded, and RH loaded all the SATA support without a problem - but Gentoo still seems to get stuck in a loop. I had this same problem with 2004.2 LiveCDs. Where can I download a test LiveCD to try out ?
Moving these so we can remove the "Install CD" component from "Gentoo Linux". I apologize to everyone for this spam, but according to the bugzilla developers, this is the only reasonable way to do this.
