For two reasons, I've masked it and returned to 4.8.0: 1) If I mute via the plugin, I cannot unmute via the plugin. The plugin gives visual feedback, but the sound remains muted. I have to open xfce4-mixer to unmute. 2) The volume control application is now hardcoded to xfce4-mixer. Before, I could set it to pavucontrol. Number (1) is clearly a bug. Number (2) may be a design choice. If so, I will be sticking with 4.8.0. The xfce4-mixer app is basically useless with pulseaudio. xfce4-mixer is now unmaintained because it could not be ported to gstreamer 1.0. xfce-extra/xfce4-pulseaudio-plugin works with pulse now.
