Description Stefan Behte (RETIRED) gentoo-dev Security 2012-10-26 12:15:33 UTC
app-emulation/libvirt-0.10.2-r2 does not work out of the box:

With both kernel 3.5.0 and 3.6.1:

# emerge -q '=app-emulation/libvirt-0.10.2-r1'
# /etc/init.d/libvirt start
# virsh list --all
error: Failed to reconnect to the hypervisor
error: no valid connection
error: Failed to connect socket to '/var/run/libvirt/libvirt-sock': No such file or directory

# /etc/init.d/libvirt stop
# emerge -q '=app-emulation/libvirt-0.9.13-r1'
# /etc/init.d/libvirt start
# virsh list --all

You're going to have to give me more details to replicate this. Other issue is that the fact that -r3 is already out and -r2 is gone from the tree.

I surely was in a hurry when I filed this and mixed up the versioning. Sorry about that. Well ok, then let's not care about <0.10.2-r3 anymore.

But app-emulation/libvirt 0.10.2-r3 has (nearly) the same bug for me, too. It's all stock libvirt, without any changes to the configuration.

It just gets stuck for a long time, when I do
# virsh list --all

and then after a while (a few minutes?) I get:

error: Failed to reconnect to the hypervisor
error: no valid connection
error: Failed to connect socket to '/var/run/libvirt/libvirt-sock': No such file or directory

Afterwards the libvirt init.d script says
# /etc/init.d/libvirtd status
 * status: crashed

and the process is actually not running anymore.

# grep libvirt /etc/portage/package.use
app-emulation/libvirt iscsi lvm qemu -nls python

Sometimes I also get:

error: Failed to reconnect to the hypervisor
error: no valid connection
error: Cannot recv data: Connection reset by peer
Comment 4 Doug Goldstein (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2012-10-26 22:12:18 UTC
I can't reproduce this at all. You're going to need to get me a backtrace of why the daemon is crashing.
Comment 5 Doug Goldstein (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2012-10-29 06:57:03 UTC
I installed a fresh Gentoo boxthis weekend (on AMD) and libvirt's working fine. Definitely need to know why its crashing on your box.
