Description Mark Dominik Bürkle 2012-10-16 17:02:42 UTC
exim does a seteuid/setegid to the target/delivery user when delivering mails to local users system mailboxes in /var/spool/mail/{user}.
This leads to the inability to create lock files, /var/spool/mail/{user}.lock.

For a successful execution of R=localuser T=local_delivery it is necessary to have exim run with egid set to mail. This is done by changing /etc/exim/exim.conf: routers: localuser: group=mail.

Compare Bug#438062 (owner:group/permissions of /var/spool/mail now root:mail/03775)

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1.emerge system
2.emerge mail-mta/exim
3.send email, e.g. echo testmailbody | mail -s testmail user
Actual Results:
In logs or by running "exim -qf -v", a line pops up stating that a lockfile cannot be created:

Permission denied: creating lock file hitching post /var/mail/mdb.lock.lapmdb-hpl.localnet.507d90a9.00005a94 (euid=1000 egid=1000)

Mail is held in the MTAs spool area until it is too old, it cannot be delivered.

Expected Results:
I'd expect a clean system to be able to deliver mails to users's system mailboxes in /var/spool/mail/{user} without having to use procmail, forwarding or maildrop.
Exim should be able to create the correct lockfiles, append new mails to the user's mailbox and remove the lockfiles afterwards.

Comment 1 Mark Dominik Bürkle 2012-10-16 17:23:04 UTC
For a successful execution of R=localuser T=local_delivery it is necessary to have exim run with egid set to mail. This is done by changing /etc/exim/exim.conf: routers: localuser: group=mail.

Could be solved by setting group=mail in section transports: local_delivery, as well.
Comment 2 Fabian Groffen gentoo-dev 2012-10-16 17:50:27 UTC
With the mailbase change to have sticky bit on /var/spool/mail, shouldn't this just work fine? Exim stores by default as the target user, but with sticky bit on the group (mail), it should work, shouldn't it?
Comment 3 Mark Dominik Bürkle 2012-10-16 18:42:15 UTC
I have the sticky bit set, as recommended by mailbase-1.1.
However, mail delivery does not work as You expect it to.

Whenever I remove "group=mail" from router localuser and transport local_delivery, mail cannot be delivered because the lockfiles cannot be created.

I've been thinking about the group-sticky bit set in /v/s/mail/, it didn't taste well to me. I think that bit comes to relevance only _after_ a new file is created, so it does not affect the decision _if_ that file might be created.

Comment 4 Fabian Groffen gentoo-dev 2012-11-04 19:33:47 UTC
I added the change to the exim.conf.dist file. Still the exim.conf.dist file is not meant just to be copied over to exim.conf, since one really has to review it before running Exim.

Thanks.
