When emerging this package with pkg-config-0.27.1 I get....

+ printf '%s\n' 'configure:5556: checking pkg-config is at least version 0.9.0'

checking pkg-config is at least version 0.9.0... + /usr/bin/pkg-config --atleast-pkgconfig-version 0.9.0
Conversion from character set 'C' to 'UTF-8' is not supported

It turns out that shared-mime-info ./configure script is setting LANGUAGE=C & LC_ALL=C and because FreeMiNT uses libiconv, and libiconv can't convert this character set. It fails.

Any else seeing this on a prefix host that uses libiconv ?

www-client/links-2.7 also has the same problem.

Fixed my C library instead.
