After updating from ati-drivers-12.4 to 12.6_beta_pre897 and then performing an update of x11-base/xorg-server from 1.11.4-r1 to 1.12.2, starting X results in an unresponsive, black screen that will not go away even if I kill X. I tried the open source driver for radeon with X.org 1.12.2 and it works. I tried ati-drivers-12.6_beta_pre897 with X.org 1.11.4-r1 and it works. Removing additional patches from my kernel-sources did not change anything. I'm now running gentoo-sources-3.5.4. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. emerge x11-drivers/ati-drivers-12.6_beta_pre897 2. emerge x11-base/xorg-server-1.12.2 3. start X via startx or display manager init script Actual Results: black screen, no mouse, no reaction to keystrokes. Can you try with xorg-server-1.12 and kernel 3.4? Also look if this problem is already reported to the unofficial fglrx bugtracker at http://ati.cchtml.com/
I tried on 3.4.5-gentoo, but to no avail. I also checked if the bug has already been reported, but it has not. I doubt though that amd is going to do anything about it even if I report because this is a legacy driver now.
I added a warning to the ebuild about this bug.
Some users report that the blank screen problem goes away after removing /etc/ati/* and then re-emerging ati-drivers. You may want to give that a try.
Please reopen the bug if the issue still exists after removing /etc/ati/*, and ati-drivers-13.1_pre897 has the same problem.
